In what I consider a major "coup" for this blog, I've received permission from the great Al Kooper (if you don't know who he is go read this ) to post MP3s of his infamous "Kapusta Kristmas Albums". I'm starting with number 3 as I've only got Volumes 3, 4 and 5. Trying to get my mitts on the other two. Tapes of these records have been a massive influence and source of amusement to me and all my musician friends over the last 20 years or so, since my buddy Mark Spencer [...]
Press release just came in the post. Would've been a great gig, but the second paragraph more than makes up for it... "Due to unavoidable circumstances the Drop Haiti's Debt gig this Thursday in Vicar Street has been cancelled. A full refund for tickets purchased is available from the point of purchase. On a hugely positive note, at the G7 summit in Canada last weekend, world leaders indicated they are prepared to drop Haiti's debt in its entirety in the imminent future. Full information on the status of Haiti's debt will be posted on [...]
Anjunadeep will release a second label compilation on February 15th, showcasing their distinct blend of progressive and electro house and deeper trance. Regular Anjuna producer Jaytech and label boss James Grant mix a disc each of Anjunadeep 02, and it features cracking new tracks from the likes of Jody Wisternoff, Solarity, Martin Roth, the on-form Oliver Smith and many more. It's a bit more of a trancey affair than its predecessor we think, and packs a hefty punch once again. Tracklisting: [...]

No one can fault Dave Mustaine for putting together a tour in lieu of the stillborn American Carnage trek. But as always the Megadeth frontman aims for maximum annoyance and as such his new tour is a brazen approximation of Carnage minus Slayer. As a member of Slayer, Kerry King must be distressed to find [...]
I'm too sick to my stomach right now to even speculate what will be said at a press conference on Friday held by ear x-tacy's owner John Timmons. The press release (below) only says that potential changes to ear x-tacy will be addressed. The tone of the release was not encouraging. Ear x-tacy is too important to loose, not only for the local music scene, but the Louisville community at whole. From now until Friday, lets make a pact. For every album you would go buy online (or "borrow" online) and for every [...]
Social Distortion have posted a new video of their pre-recording rehearsals as they gear up to record their long awaited studio album. The album is due out this year and will be the first since 2004's Sex, Love and Rock 'n' Roll . It features the current lineup of Mike Ness, Jonny Wickersham, Brent Harding and new drummer Atom Willard.
(photo: Marilis Cardinal) "Heavy, dark, but totally fun" is the way Montreal trio Nightwood describe themselves, and that's pretty apropos after listening to a few of the tracks on offer over at their Myspace page. The band originally caught my attention when they sent me an email letting me know about their most recent video "Bright Girls of Summer" off their October 2009 release, Carta Marina . The video is a time-lapsed document of the entire recording process for the record. When accompanied by the song's march-like beat, the [...]

Brooklyn's Class Actress (once the solo project of singer Elizabeth Harper) debut EP, entitled 'Journal Of Ardency' is out today on Grizzly Bear's Chris Taylor Terrible Records. The band pulls from a variety of styles, ranging from the 80's synth pop of Depeche Mode and New Order, the vivaciousness and sexuality of early Madonna, and the bubbly heartbreak of Mazzy Star. Yeah, the track 'Journal Of Ardency' sounds pretty amazing! Class Actress: "Journal of Ardency" [ mp3 ]

On the eve before his sentencing in a Manhattan court today—where he's expected to be carted off to prison to serve a one-year term —Lil Wayne shot an hour-long video with Young Money member Lil Twist. The UStream clip, posted at Rap-Up , meanders through bouts of honest moments, in-jokes, rambling and some definite NSFW moments. But all the while Weezy remains upbeat. "So tonight's my last night, I ain't got no p****," he says. "I came to the studio to get some work done... So to all you artists out there, that should be some [...]
There was an absolutely bonkers story in the New York Times this weekend about how there's been a rash of karaoke murders involving Frank Sinatra's "My Way" in the Philippines. Apparently, if you get up and sing it in a Philippine bar, your liable to get your face stomped in, shanked, or at worst, buried. Seriously. The story is about how people who do karaoke in the Philippines have stopped doing "My Way," even though that's the song they'd all like to sing. But they don't out of fear of making someone mad enough to kill them. The craziest part [...]

Place: A barge on the Seine in Paris. Time: 1910. It is close to sundown in Paris, and the stevedores work unloading Michele's barge. Giorgetta, Michele's wife, asks her husband if she can bring wine to the workers. He agrees but does not join them because she refuses his kiss. The stevedores start dancing to the music of a nearby organ grinder and one of them steps on Giorgetta's foot. Luigi, a stevedore, dances with her, and it is evident that there is something between them. Upon hearing of Michele's return the stevedores' gathering [...]

She might be better known today for her flamboyant style, plastic surgery excesses and dumb blond stage persona, but before she became a pop-culture caricature, Dolly Parton was a tremendous singer, under-rated songwriter and country music ambassador to the world. By the age of 13, Parton had already been signed to a label and appeared at the Grand Ole Opry and was well on her way to being dubbed the "Queen of Country Music". To date, she has 25 number-one singles and a record 41 top-10 country albums. Along with classics like "Coat of [...]
