I discovered the pleasures of shortwave radio as a teenager in the early 80s. My new radio presented a spectrum of listening opportunities that I'd never known were possible. Grand, formal concerts of approved music from the USSR, often far more adventurous and radical than anything presented as popular culture on this side of the Iron Curtain. Torturous political diatribes from Albania, and music from the State Tractor Factory Massed Bands. Oceans of howling, quasi-melodic feedback and interference, which I would tape, listen to again, and insert in random places on compilation tapes for friends. [...]
