waking the sound , the debut album from san francisco duo the brokenmusicbox , does so gently, warmly. the sound is not snapped from sleep, but given time and space and sympathy to slowly realize how much better it is to be awake than sleeping, what kind of joys it had missed in slumber. which is not to say the album lacks verve. rather, the brokenmusicbox rightly don't feel the need to show off or forcefully wrest attention with noises or tricks or false emotion. the confident & well-crafted songs on waking the sound patiently, insistently [...]
