According to Ryan, while living in the New York's legendary Hotel Chelsea , he was doing speedballs (mixture of heroin and cocaine) every day . Thankfully the eccentric singer-songwriter quit cold turkey in 2006, avoiding the fate of deceased Alice in Chains frontman, Layne Staley. On his recent tour supporting 2007's critically acclaimed album Easy Tiger (buy) , he often played Staley's prophetic "Down in a Hole" ; one of my favorite Alice in Chains songs.
