Top of the Pops used to insist that bands that played on the show perform to backing tracks, not really play their instruments, and in the really olden days of yore, lip-synch their songs. Morrissey rebelled by using a bouquet of flowers as a microphone when the Smiths debuted "This Charming Man" on the show.
