SXSW 2009 Session Recap - Lady Dottie & The Diamonds Born in Alabama, Dorothy Mae Whitsett (aka Lady Dottie) got her start singing in a gospel choir. She was raised in a family of 14 but it's hard to imagine that she ever had trouble being heard with her powerful voice. Her musical prowess knows no bounds. She started singing the blues at age 20 and, at one point, even performed jazz standards in a piano bar.
