The Mercury Prize is a perennial British music award which affords winners a year's worth of bragging rights, a spike in media coverage and album sales, £20,000 cash and undeniable proof they're better than Radiohead . The albums shortlisted this year, released between July 2008 and July 2009 by a British or Irish artist, are certainly diverse with self-important stadium rockers (Kasabian) sitting alongside sophomore chameleons (The Horrors) and relative unknowns who live up to their name (The Invisible).
