The Welcome Sailor is a traditional song which was brought to wider notice when Lal and Norma Waterson covered it on their 1977 album A True Hearted Girl . It's doubtful that either would have anticipated the eerie strangeness of this version, however. Richard Youngs uses multi-tracked vocals and electronics to for a haunting and decidedly experimental performance. Despite the adventurous treatment, Youngs sings this absolutely straight; he's honouring the folk tradition while reinventing it. An unexpectedly beautiful treat.
