The Italian futurist composer Luigi Russolo is one of the most influential figures in 20th century music. His work remains seldom heard, yet the debt that virtually all modern music owes to him is enormous. Russolo was the author of the 1913 manifesto The Art of Noises , and his goal was to free music from the confine of instruments. For him, all sound could be musical sound.
