From the Philadelphia Inquirer : "John P. Murtha, 77, the powerful dean of Pennsylvania's congressional delegation who survived scandal and seismic political shifts to become the longest-serving House member from the state, died yesterday at a hospital in Arlington, Va., after complications from gallbladder surgery." Murtha was also the first Vietnam combat veteran to be elected to the House. It should also be noted that he was dubbed the "King of Pork" by many of his colleagues.
