Were it not for The Violent Femmes, and far less notably The Gufs, the musical progeny of Wisconsin would be next to nil. In truth, Wisconsin is more regrettably known for killing musicians than cultivating them. Otis Redding's Beechcraft plunged into the ice water of Lake Monona in Madison, and Stevie Ray Vaughan's helicopter crashed into what passes for a ski hill at Alpine Valley, outside of East Troy. But thanks to a small folk collective from Eau Claire who embrace the true and abstract nature of Wisconsin, the state is fast becoming a geographical niche for folk music. Part [...]
