I've been following an ongoing discussion on Tumblr over what a music critic's obligation to their readers should be. One school of thought is that there have to be objective, measurable criteria by which a critic can weigh and judge a composition. Another view is that since the listening experience is by its very nature subjective, establishing an objective set of standards that would likely just force someone to compromise their instincts is far less important than simply being a good listener.
