Just like hair cuts and leather shorts, musical genres pass in and out of fashion almost in the blink of an eye. But in the periphery, lurking almost out of view, shoegaze and drone are always there, beavering away regardless of whether it's nu-rave, witch house or MOR that's taking the front pages of the music press.
