To characterize the Robert Glasper Experiment’s new album, Black Radio, as eclectic would be a gross understatement. The record opens with an undulating 7-chord vamp from Glasper’s piano, and his voice is quickly joined by the rest of the band: Chris “Daddy” Dave’s needlepoint drums, the anchor of Derrick Hodge’s bass guitar, and a ghostly wail of saxophonist Casey Benjamin’s vocoder. Shafiq Husayn introduces the band, and the vamp fades into the mic-check routines of the album’s many guest vocalists – Eryka Badu, Mos Def, Lupe Fiasco, Meshell Ndegeocello, and Bilal, to name a few – before the opening chords [...]
