Stereogum Arthur Russell blended dance, folk, pop, classical, whatever, and created something utterly unique and extraordinary. He died of AIDS in 1992, at age 40, but his profile has risen considerably over the last two decades; frankly, I'd guess that a majority of the artists covered by Stereogum would cite him as an influence.
