A Patterson Hood B-side is better than most songwriter's best A-sides. Hood's solo output, apart from the Truckers, has been spotted with sparse (often much darker) material, and taken as a whole (3 albums worth) amounts to a solid body of work. While never quite as satisfying as a full blooded Patterson effort such as "Used to be a Cop" the writing on these albums is concise, clear, strong and deeply personal.
