Here's the song that caused Tipper Gore to have a Victorian-era style hemorrhage and start slapping Parental Advisory stickers on anything resembling a four letter word, Darling Nikki by Prince . Fun part was that no marketing team in the world could have dreamt up better publicity than those little stickers did. BTW Is the PMRC still around? Leading the purple proselytizers today is my pick, Love Is All , with their Yeah Yeah Yeahs/Cristina influenced screecher. Kudos to Xlover [...]

Hello everybody!!! It is good to be back!! Sorry about the mass hiatus but I was in South America for a couple of months and it has taken me a month to get my head back. Many thanks must go to Adso for the great work at keeping the blog pumping with all your music needs. Now in the same vein as my Top 15 albums of 2007 , my Top 25 of 2008 and Adso's Favourite 15 albums of 2009 I bring my Top 30 Albums of 2009. Now this list has [...]

First off, this photo set is really great and worth a pass through, compliments in part to Glasslands gallery's new "cloud cover" installation, and in part to the always impressive camera work of Ryan Muir . Bands in post-title listed in order of dominance, although there's no reason to try to try call winners between the morning benders and headliner Class Actress, both of whose sets alone made going out in the hostile cold for the marathon five-band lineup seem like the weekend's smartest decision. the morning benders recently relocated to this neighborhood, and put it on [...]

The first update of 2010 (and the first in more than 3 months!) is two days late, partly due to a computer virus, but better late than never! I'd almost forgotten how to write these. The website hasn't been entirely fallow since November; I've posted Best of 2009 posts on "music albums" and " Summerworks shows" , with "Fringe shows" coming up soon, and "comedy shows" and "music singles" not far behind. But the core of the site - the updates - well, it's good to have one of those up again, and I'm going to try to [...]
Friday, February 5, 2010 It's a short week for films and I think we're all better off for it. If a Nicholas Spark's romantic piece, a new John Travolta film and a limited release horror flick from the sometimes-loved, sometimes-hated man behind Hatchet are all the studios can muster, I think a three-film weekend is called for. As always, the acerbic and intelligent Alex will be adding her two cents to the proceedings at hand. Thanks for reading. Hitting Theaters This [...]

Hat tip to Dirt Mall 's Johnny Anguish, who gave us this scoop (and also wrote several of the songs on the soundtrack! ): A new movie opening tomorrow features a bunch of Boston bands, past and present, on its soundtrack. The movie, titled Frozen , just premiered at Sundance and gets a limited release this week. If it does well this weekend, it may go wider the following week. Written and directed by Adam Green, who grew up in Mass., all of the songs in the movie (not counting the [...]

Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars I'll be the first to admit that I haven't quite gotten on the Beach House bandwagon. In the past, their dreamy bedroom pop has just seemed far too dull for me to ever fully absorb; I'll admit that's a fault of my own and not the music. Yet listening to Teen Dream , something else unfolds. There isn't some grand gesture that comes out of nowhere; it's just that the logical progression of the group has finally caught [...]

This news makes me want to wear a summer dress, over jeans, and twirl, twirl, twirl- the Lilith Fair is headed to Portland! But this isn't your mother's Lilith Fair. This means that Paula Cole is not playing, sorry. Instead, the newly named 2010 Lilith Tour has a pretty solid lineup. Here's a partial list: A Fine Frenzy, Ann Atomic, Ash Koley, Beth Orton, Brandi Carlile, Butterfly Boucher, Cat Power, Ceci Bastida, Chairlift, Chantal Kreviazuk, Colbie Caillat, Corinne Bailey Rae, Donna Delory, Elizaveta, Emmylou Harris, Erin McCarley, Erykah Badu, Frazey Ford, Gossip, Grace Potter [...]
With high expectations, rebel citizens of the millennial generation leave the tired and corporate ruled world of radio to begin a new life in music blogs... Raid the radio! Cause we're tired of hearing the same old song. We're gonna change the dial to something new. Bring some truth to this town." - General Electriks However, the Recording Industry of America gains great military powers and soon ceases control of [...]
If there's any indication so far that 2010 is going to be a stellar year for indie rock, look no further than the City of Brotherly Love to shine some light in that direction. Hailing from The Land of the Libery Bell in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, supernatural jangle pop indie rock quartet Drink Up Buttercup is one of these new-found bands to keep your eyes peeled for. The band have been busy the past few months picking up critical acclaim and preparing to release its debut record, titled Born and Thrown On A Hook through [...]

63 glorious years have passed since the babe with the power/kitty cat came into this world. And, according to Pitchfork , the long-rumored Bowie tribute album is taking serious shape, with the likes of Megapuss, Rainbow Arabia, Vivian Girls and A Place to Bury Strangers among the list of artists involved. Dear Lord, is APTBS' cover of "Suffragette City" going to sound bonkers. Anyway, no title yet, but the the album will be available on CD and limited edition double-LP, as well as digitally with a host of bonus tracks. The as-of-now "tentative" tracklist is available after Das Leap, [...]
In an update on Duran Duran's official website , the band announced that they have recorded a cover of Bowie's "Boys Keep Swinging" for label Manimal Vinyl's tribute album due to "start leaking," according to the announcement, in mid-February. Fiction: Thom Yorke is penning new songs to be on the album Still a possiblity: MGMT will contribute to the album Fact: These artists and songs are on the album: ITMUSIC "Space Oddity" VIVIAN GIRLS "John, I'm Only Dancing" MEGAPUSS (Devendra Banhart) "Sound + Vision" (en espanol) CARLA BRUNI [...]
Andrew Waits It doesn't seem quite accurate to call this an "introduction" to Seattle's The Dutchess & The Duke since I technically already wrote up the duo of Jesse Lortz and Kimberly Morrison when I saw them during CMJ 2008 , but whatever. My blog, and I can do what I like, and rather than do a review of either their 2008 debut She's The Dutchess, He's The Duke or last year's follow-up Sunset/Sunrise , I'll mash observations on both together since, thankfully, [...]
While I thought the original video for the opening track of Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix, was fairly decent, I litterally fell in love with Sarah Newhouse's take of the song. She basically mashed up several scenes of some 80s movies (The Breakfast Club, Footloose, Pretty In Pink, Mannequin) making it almost seems like the scenes were made with Lisztomania in mind and just waited for Phoenix to just release it … Natasha Khan videos always gave me the creeps, not as being afraid per se, but there's always something odd [...]
