I've heard the name NinjaSonik before, but I don't know if I ever really gave them a chance. Then I read this: They have an artist/punk (who summons ODB), a rapper, and a DJ/producer called TEEN WOLF in the group . And just like that, I'm on board. NinjaSonik has a debut album coming out on MIA's fiance's label GreenOwl Records on everyone's favorite holiday, 4/20. Their sound is raw, wild, sloppy, and as energizing as that 50/50 Red Bull and Vodka at 4AM that you'll definitely regret when you wake up at [...]
Why isn't there universal shorthand for tracks in which rappers individually single out their loved ones, from God to Mom to the local corner slinger? Lupe Fiasco's "Outro" is a bloated exampl... Today I read read a post on Shut Up, Bands ripping apart a young band with little inspiration. I forwarded it to my studio engineer friend and he ended up writing his own critique and even offered to record one free track for them. Here is a good song instead. TRACK: Matt & Kim - Daylight (Troublemaker [...]
All this sh*t weather has one advantage - i'm spending more time indoors with the machine. The stirring pot of singles is getting smashed like crabs so podcasts are flying out the kitchen quicksmart. The rain's forecast til Thursday - we may see another mix this week as well. Hope i'm not lulling you into a false sense of (regular update) security. Will do my best. Enjoy... MGMT mentioned that their new album, "Congratulations" may end up being released in April at the Grammy's. It seems like the band are confirming this with a April 13th release date. There is no official announcement, but the band has a countdown on their website , and it leads to April 13th, which is a Tuesday. Coincidence? Probably not! A moving image of the ocean heads the band's page. Possible album cover as well? They sure do love their beach/water imagery! On a seperate note, the band is playing at Coachella, as well as [...]
Alright kiddies, it's that time of year again! And it's about time we started doing leg stretches, jogging, and building stamina in preparation for the wild disco radical trans-global gypsy outfit known only as Gogol Bordello rolling through our home towns. In support of their undoubtedly spectacular fifth studio album, Transcontinental Hustle , Eugene Hutz and his gang of Multi-Kontra misfit musicians have finally added a chunk of U.S. dates to their upcoming Casa Gogol Tour! The Casa Gogol Tour holds many surprises for us this spring. Kicking off in New York, as per usual, [...]
2009 was a pretty productive year for music on the whole. Started off with Little Boots being picked as the Sound of 2009 by the BBC, and look where she is now - can see the same happening to Ellie Goulding and Marina & The Diamonds, fortunately/unfortunately. A few strong releases came about, including K'naan's sophomore album Troubadour, one of my favourites, if not the favourite, of last year. Passion Pit started to get a lot bigger, as did the likes of CuDi, both of whom have blown up over the past year with strong debut releases. Can't really [...]

The charm and sweetness from previous releases is lacking, with song names as long as fortune cookie sayings trying cover that up. Themes favoring sex over love make some songs feel as rewarding as a (forgettable) one night stand. The mix of boy/girl vocals is the saving grace here. Time for something a little off the beaten path. Check out a guilt-free MP3 download of "Setback" by Atlanta pop-rockers The Constellations. The city's latest local supergroup creates a funky 70s vibe through the mixture of "Gorillaz inspired twang" and smooth vocals. Their debut album, "Southern Gothic," features tracks produced by Ben Allen, the GRAMMY Award winning mixer for Animal Collective, Gnarls Barkley and Matt and Kim. The album also includes some great collaborations with both Cee Lo and Asher Roth, as well as a tribute to Tom Waits in the track "Step Right Up". Go get [...]

CAIRO! Não conhece? CAIRO é Isaac Varzim (do Superpose ) e [...]

Austin, TX is a hot bed for music. There is no denying that. If you have ever been there you can just feel the buzz on 6th Street. Deep in the heart of Texas scores of bands come and go, but an Austin band called The Reivers had a small, but fervent following. Sometimes, if you are like me and you just crave that CD you missed, you come across a record that has a lot of critical buzz many years later. The Reivers' End of The Day has that kind of cult following. I bought this album about seven years [...]

No real surprises to report. Beyoncé earned a bundle of Grammys. Lady Gaga delivered a rousing - and surprisingly uncontroversial - duet with Elton John . Taylor Swift also cleaned up, though her number with Stevie Nicks sounded a tad off (as did Slash's guitar solo during T-Pain's performance). Best prop goes to Best Comedy Album winner Steven Colbert , who pulled an iPad out of his jacket during his monologue. And kudos to Kings of Leon for admitting they were a tad drunk while accepting the Grammy [...]

You can always count on Matt at You Ain't No Picasso to find a sweet bootleg or two, and he's come through for all Radiohead fans again. He's got a link to the band's Haiti benefit show at L.A.'s Music Box last Sunday, and now you have it, too. The setlist spans the band's career (except for Pablo Honey ) and features just a single new track, "Lotus Flower". Still it's a great live set, and it was all for a good cause. Cheers to Matt for passing it along, and a big shout-out to "hardlylurkin" from [...]

Promotional photos of bands jumping in the air annoy the hell out of me. Sure The Beatles did it, but that was nearly FIFTY YEARS AGO. If your band is at a photo-shoot and the photographer says, "Hey! You know what would be fun? You guys jump in the air and I'll take your picture!" Go find yourself another photographer. If one of your bandmates suggests the idea, kick the person out of your band... or at least put them in time-out for an hour or so. It's such a bush-league idea and although it may have been cute years [...]

For those living in Toronto and going to the Legendary Horseshow Tavern. January 23rd is the last show for Oh No Forest Fires . Wish I could be there in attendance but it sucks that I live in Ottawa. The first time I saw this band was in November 7, 2008 . Let's say it was the start of running up and down of Cafe Dekcuf and Mavericks. I didn't know there was a show upstairs, besides knowing that Fire Heats Water was playing (who [...]
