Some DVD and CD reviews coming your way soon, but today it's a pre-holiday cleanup of things that have been cluttering up my desk, my email, and my mind. New Exc!tement Every year the Toronto Sketch Comedy Festival opens its arms to our friends to the south and invites some kids from the New York sketch scene up to Toronto. The contingent of New York sketch troups has always had a solid presence at the festival. Past notables include Elephant Larry, Freedom, FUCT and Free Love Forum . This year is no different with Free Love Forum back again along with BOF, Kanellis & Armstrong and New Exc!tement making the trip north. I sent New [...]

"HAPPY F*IN' HALLOWEEN, JUGGALOOOOOOOOOOOOOOS!!!!!" This low, bellowing voice was the greeting of a big bald dude in the middle of a wrestling ring with "Hallowicked" painted on the side of it. The packed hive of demented clown people cheered back. If my 5 hour perspective on Detroit is accurate (and I'm hoping it's not), the population of Detroit is distributed roughly: 0.5 parts hipster; 3 parts panhandler; and 1209812091724019842 parts Juggalo. I've never played a show with a paper thin wall separating me from an Insane Clown Posse after party on Halloween (complete with wrestling ring [...]

Sales will open up on Monday, November 2nd and they are EXTREMELY limited to only 100 copies. Each 33 CD will be approximately 20 minutes of new, unreleased music from each artist. Lots of the bands involved frequently play here in Louisville, so it [...]

Richard Whitehurst is a Columbus, Ohio based artist who is set to unveil his new exhibition entitled, The Rape Tunnel. This dude needs to catch a swift groin kick for letting his artistic freedom make him think he can get so out of pocket. Sure, we're chauvinists around these parts, but treating the threat of rape the same as the threat of rain is just wrong. Pardon the seriousness, I promise to have you back to your regularly scheduled debauchery soon. The artist plans to place himself in a room, the only entrance or exit being [...]
Brooklyn's White Rabbits Announce Fall Tour! Brooklyn transplants White Rabbits are hitting the road hard with their upcoming North American Fall tour. The band is bringing its exciting show to New York, Boston, Philadelphia, Los Angeles, Madison, and Canadian cities including Montreal and Vancouver. (Jason continues to breathe air into this blog while a rather busy time for work keeps me from doing much other than eating and sleeping.) I've been really delighted with Asthmatic Kitty's Library Catalog Music series, a set of instrumental albums designed by the label "for possible use in films and television, background sounds for home or office, or personal needs, such as relaxation, stimulation, meditation, concentration, or elevation," with specific uses such as "accompaniment to cooking, eating, sculpting, exercising, high stakes [...]
I am not a big purveyor of music videos as I am more about the music than the video - if you know what I mean. But sometimes a video adds even more to a song - I believe this is true for my favourite video from late last year and one from earlier this year. Last year Damien Jurado's "Caskets" absolutely blew me away, and still does. The fact that it is basically a family affair (his brother Drake is the "patient") simply makes it even better - you couldn't have picked better individuals to play all [...]
Kissing Cousins gave us another booty call over the weekend, calling in from that other City of Roses, Portland, OR. There, they rendezvoused with their lovely flutist Kara Haro, as well as made time to spend with friends in the area including Richard Swift. After which, they headed to their next destination, Seattle (posting tomorrow), and then back home for a show on Wednesday!Full dates below
On his 2009 release Atlantic Ocean, quirky pop singer Richard Swift delivers a catchy pop confection that evokes a jaunty '70s soft rock vibe while simultaneously updating the sound to include cheerfully weird electronics. I have no idea what it...

It's been a while... I guess for long periods of this year there has been little in the way of new music that has really excited me. Much of my time has been invested in some fantastic re-issues, The Beatles re-masters, the Neil Young Archives and the amazing Big Star box ' Keep An Eye On The Sky ' to name but three. Anyway, to cut a rather dull and pointless story on the meaninglessness of existance short, I am back and this time I hope to actually deliver a consistent number of posts before I lose faith again. [...]

[Photo Credit: Joshua Pickering] So, you know those people who are SO organized that it's a bit irritating? What with the lists, and the spreadsheets, and the minutely-arranged schedules? Well, at least for one brief, shining moment, that was us: during the 48-hour countdown to departure, Lisa and I find ourselves methodically ticking things off of "to do" lists with a blind fury--and unnerving regularity. How can this be going so smoothly? Our suspicions are aroused. Our paranoia notwithstanding, it would seem the rock gods are smiling on our endeavor. Virgin Atlantic provides a swell [...]

It's been ages since we've bought out a vinyl ep... times change and BATTANT deserve it no? At first we wondered who could we ask to remix these rock songs. We didn't look for too long, but simply turned to those who have been with us since a long time. Firstly Mickey Moonlight . The London posse. We've compiled his tracks as early as 2000. Remember that he put out records under the name of SONOVAC or Midnight Mike on his own label - Flesh Records. The sound was rocky and noisy, [...]

In the Book Notes series, authors create and discuss a music playlist that relates in some way to their recently published book. Matthew Spektor's debut novel That Summertime Sound is a coming-of-age story set in the Columbus, Ohio of the mid-1980s, and music frames the narrative impressively throughout the book. Check out the book's website to hear audio excerpts from the book read by James Franco, Jeremy Irons, Gwyneth Paltrow, J. Mascis, and Morgan Freeman. Jonathan Lethem wrote of the book: "Matthew [...]
