There are some pretty good ones, but nothing so amazing as to be obvious. However, School of Seven Bells performance at Music Hall of Williamsburg tonight should be pretty memorable--and just off the beaten path enough that badge holders MIGHT be able to get in without too much hassle. Last night was kind of a bust for me CMJ -wise, (well I didn't go out, so it wasn't like I went out and was disappointed or anything), but tonight should prove to be a different story. It looks I'll be dividing my time between the Mercury Lounge (early/late), Bowery Ballroom , Arlene's Grocery (M for Montreal), and perhaps a late night visit to the Cake Shop ( After the Jump Late Night Party ) or the Bell House . Here are some of my Wednesday night picks: [...]

If it's mid-October in New York City, then it's CMJ Music Marathon time... five days and nights of music, film, informative panels, and parties that guarantee a good time, if your idea of a good time involves nonstop live shows from up-and-coming musicians from a variety of genres. Thing is, since you're reading EAR FARM, we're going to go ahead and assume that CMJ 2009 is your idea of a good time. Ours too. And it just so turns out that fourteen of our previously featured Bands of the Week are playing the festival [...]

Introducing Brooklyn's (yep Brooklyn again , have they nicked all the new band fairy dust) Fugitive Soul who only formed in May of this year! Well if you are regular to this site you know I kinda like a little bit of indie pop and rock, so I guess it's fair to say the these guys were in with chance from the start. That said there is an awful lot of 'stuff' out there so you still need to stand out, and the fresh breezy and vigorous sound of their new 'Strangers' EP does just that [...]
CMJ released the band schedule for its 2009 Music Marathon & Film Festival yesterday, which is about as good a sign of fall hitting New York as the return of apple cider at Greenmarket. The festival runs from Oct. 20 - Oct. 24 and includes various venues throughout the city, and the list of featured artists would probably take all four days to read through. But skimming the selection reveals a fairly equal distribution of well-known acts like Atlas Sound and Deer Tick , anonymous locals (including krautrock-y Jeff Buckley-channelers Pocketknife), twenty-two bands who [...]
The press release below doesn't actually list all the acts performing at CMJ this year, so you're probably better off checking out cmj.sched.org to get a true idea of what's happening during this year's marathon. Of course, sched.org is a little confusing too and it doesn't list unofficial events and day parties (as far as I know), so you'll have to wait a little bit longer for info to trickle out from the blogs and other unofficial sources. Lastly, even though the press release says the schedule is "final", you can pretty much bet that things will shift [...]
"Someday, I'll have a grandkid and he'll say, 'Grandpa, you suck, you lost to PHIL COLLINS!'" This was the expression of humiliation by South Park creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker after their brilliant movie soundtrack lost to the tepid and safe "Tarzan" album. They made it sound so easy to sound cool by hating Mr. C. I can understand-recent Phil Collins is kind of like recent wine, more sugary grape juice than mind-altering-it's easy to forget how flippin' huge the bald pianist was back in the '80s. His Genesis stuff was what made that [...]
