Love 'em or hate 'em, the folks at Pitchfork sure know how to put together a music festival that is big on heavy hitters and low on price. The influential music site has revealed the initial lineup for for the fifth annual Pitchfork Music Festival which as we previously reported will be headlined by Pavement. They will be joined by Modest Mouse, LCD Soundsystem, St. Vincent, Raekwon, Lightning Bolt, Cass McCombs, Here We Go Magic & Sleigh Bells with more acts to be announced soon. The [...]

Today, Yeasayer released their new album, Odd Blood , which is still working its way through my brain. The band has always been amazing live and bring those talents to the Majestic Theatre in Madison along with Sleigh Bells on Wednesday, April 28th . Odd Blood is currently available as a $3.99 digital download here . Also out today is Hot Chip's One Life Stand which was just given Best [...]

Past the wallpapered windows of posters for upcoming shows, there is a room that is engrained the in the memories of Seattle's music fans. While it's nothing spectacular to the eye, it's rich in history with performances of the up-and-comers. Mixed in with the area's many bars, Neumo's (pronounced "New Moe's") in Seattle's Capitol Hill neighborhood looks like another bar to the casual passer-by. Walking past are all the 20-somethings heading to the bars or grabbing a hot dog outside one of the three surrounding carts at 2 a.m. But inside holds much more than some [...]
The Cave Singers are a band I'm surprised more people aren't talking about. The trio from Seattle, lead by vocalist Peter Quirk have developed their sound into a folksy comparison of Fleet Foxes with undertones of Bob Dylan. Have I got your attention? Their sophomore album released at the end of 2009 (Aug 18th) Welcome Joy (Matador Records) sees the band developing a softer sound on tracks like "Beach House," venturing away from their more progressive, and bluesy tracks like "Dancing on Our... Every month I like to put together a collection of songs (a Monthly Mix) that I currently dig and or have caught my attention in one way or another. Unfortunately the whole Muxtape thing went downhill after a few months and then someone wasn't having the idea of me posting a zip file, so now the end result is hoping that you take the time to search out these songs and listen to them in this particular order. I've included a few mp3s, however I suggest searching the rest out over on the Hype Machine [...]
Friday, January 29, 2010 Today's Quick Mention: If you don't have any plans tomorrow then I highly recommend that you grab a cowbell and head to the Austin Convention Center at 7pm to support the Rhinestone Cowgirls as they take on the Putas Del Fuego in an epic roller derby battle. Go Dill Dozer! Nick Krgovich is a busy man. Not only does he have a variety of duties in No Kids and P:ano, but now he's joined up with producer/engineer Colin [...]
(Post-Punk/New Wave/Dance) The Topman CTRL shows are quite a novel idea; Topman's music 'experts' pick a band once each month - this time Filthy Dukes - who then take turns to feature the music they love at a series of gigs across the country. This time it was Bournemouth's 60 Million Postcards' turn to play host to We Have Band, Clock Opera and the only band i actually managed to catch in the end, O Children. They are a 80s inspired post-punk/dance band (very keen to dispel Joy Division comparisons) with one [...]

photo by Michelle Mayne Gigi is the brainchild of songwriter Nick Krgovich (No Kids and P:ano) producer Colin Stewart (Black Mountain, Cave Singers and Destroyer) and two very large vintage plate reverbs (some dusty storage space). The two of them got together a few years ago with their newly found reverb plates tucked under their arms and the inkling of making a record the way Phil Spector did before he wore nutty wigs and developed a penchant for guns. Besides the Spector [...]

I know part of my mission is to bring you, the reader, the latest and my uniquely original music possible, but sometimes the most rewarding and exciting music is deeply grounded in the past. In the case of Vancouver's Gigi it the knowledge and respect for what has come before mixed with the fresh and creative approach to recreation that makes their debut so special. Gigi is the recording project of songwriter Nick Krgovich and producer/engineer Colin Stewart. The story goes that in 2005, Stewart acquired two huge vintage plate reverbs, and enlisted Krgovich and other musician friends [...]
"How can it be bullshit to state a personal preference?" – Rob Gordon, High Fidelity For many reasons – personal and otherwise – I'm glad 2009 is over. I realize this is probably an unpopular sentiment, but the year in music seemed like a dud. As my friend Royce claims, it was the year of the No. 8 album – as in, the best albums belong no higher than the eighth spot on year-end lists. That's his theory and I'm sticking to it. That said, I know I'm only getting back [...]

We've been listening to a good bit of African music in the new year; Orchestre Poly-Rythmo de Cotonou, Ghana and Nigeria Special compilations and Fela Kuti with Ginger Baker are all incredible records. I've previously mentioned The Peelies and Futurebirds, if you haven't downloaded FB's free EP , I recommend it. Mazes, Alex Bleeker, Rainbow Bridge, Twin Sister, The High Wire, Crayon Fields, Holiday Shores, The Cave Singers and Allo, Darlin' have dominated our speakers for the past month. If you dig the music, please sample and support these artists. MAZES [...]
Sometimes, the most obvious answer is right in front of your face. I went around and around, mentally juggling my favorite songs of the year – all of which were great but none of which really stood out above the rest. In a year that I felt was just sorta "eh," singling out one track as my favorite seemed daunting. (Hell, I even considered a Yeasayer song – Tightrope – and anyone who knows me knows how ridiculous that sounds.) But then I recently heard Phoenix's [...]
(Pop/Showtunes/60s) GIGI are a band of collaborators spawned in 2005 by songwriter Nick Krgovich and producer Colin Stewart , who after the former's acquisition of two authentic 60s plate reverbs back in summer 2005 figured that their time had come to create some authentic sounding 60s showtune pop songs. Citing Phil Spector and "The Brill Building Sound" as their influences, the duo proceeded to feature guest collaborators on every single one of the resultant tracks, which in turn contributed to a collection [...]
