Before even listening to this quartet from Minneapolis, I had only known One For The Team solely because of its frontman Ian Anderson, who's blog ( MFR - Minneapolis F*cking Rocks ) I happen to visit quite frequently for over a year now. Besides running his successful blog, Anderson also wears many different hats, among them being running his own label at Afternoon Records and author of the book "Here Come The Regulars" which discusses the ins and outs of running a record label on a shoestring budget. Time for my belated and bloated annual look back at the past year... yes, we're mere hours away from February, but I started a dangerous precedent last year when I posted my year-end review at the end of January. Last year saw a dramatic drop in my post count, less than half the posts of 2008 and my lowest total since 2006. I partially blame the lingering effect of that blogger crackdown, but another contributing factor is the new job I started around the same time in late '08. Now I'm more or less happy with one [...]
You heard me. Frightened Rabbit is going on an extensive American tour in support of their forthcoming third full-length, The Winter of Mixed Drinks , due out March 9. This doesn't happen particularly often, so don't miss it. Seriously, don't. If I hear any more about this negligence of yours, I'm really going to get angry. It's just selfish, you know? You you you. Always about you. See a band live, for a change. Live a little. Gosh. Frightened Rabbit - "Head Rolls Off" [MP3] March 17 - Austin, Texas [...]

We first heard from Chicago's My Gold Mask back in April when they gave us some cool dark, brooding stuff. Now they're back with a much more polished sound that's a little less brooding, but still just dark enough for my taste. They've recently released their A Thousand Voices EP , and are offering up "Circle Mass" as the second single. While not quite as strong as initial single "Violet Eyes," it makes a strong case as a good B-side. The EP is available for stream and download over at My Gold Mask's Band Camp [...]

As Basic Soul Unit, Toronto's Stuart Li has earned a reputation as something of a producer's producer. Combining the rough-hewn trackiness of underground techno with hazy atmospherics of deep house (not to mention a healthy pinch of low-end and DFA-style synth wackiness), his releases for labels like New Kanada and Mathematics have shown they can play chameleon in practically any discerning record bag. But 2009, which saw his "Dank" single released by Philpot and his track "Things Pass" included in Ostgut Ton's Panorama Bar 02 EP, scraped away at Li's underground status, raising the bar on his studio [...]

2000 Oasis - Standing on the Shoulder of Giants Coldplay - Parachutes [...]

While I professed in my albums post that perhaps this wasn't the greatest year for albums, or at least it didn't have too many true classics, 2009 has been an incredible year for songs. I really had trouble culling this list down to only 100, which is definitely a lot of songs. Of course, when Spencer Krug's various bands take up over a dozen slots, it leaves little room for other things, but this was a really wonderful year. Even more shocking is the staggering list of great new albums expected out in 2010, but we'll save [...]

A playlist for 2009: the ten best tracks of the year! With 2009 fast coming to a close, every blog everywhere is scrambling to put together their best of lists. Obviously, this indie shuffle contributor is no different. I decided to pick the top ten songs I would put on a released in 2009 soundtrack. Think of this as your every own indie pop playlist spanning the twelve months. I tried to pick songs released at different times of the year, from back in February ( here we go magic ) to more recent [...]
The up & coming Tealights have been on the road over the past year touring with indie acts such as Octopus Project, Asobi Seksu, Throw Me the Statue, Evangelicals, Starf*cker, and School of Seven Bells. I gave their latest EP, Take Us By Sea, a listen the other night and was extremely drawn in by [...]

juuusssttt kiddin' I'll admit I was a stubborn bastard this year when it came to listening to new jams. I like to let things hit me when the mood strikes rather than forced active listening, but when that fucks me over are times like these when I still haven't listened to Veckatimest all the way through... it'll prob be my favorite album of 2010. In case my opinion/taste/thoughts mean anything and if I really am "all the things that are outside of me" to quote Animal Collective, then these are the records that have [...]
Fan made video for TheDeathSet's take on Deadelus' "Fair Weather Friends." One of the sweetest live jams! Oh, and a really tight video - like if Octopus Project animated for Adult Swim. Daedelus - Fair Weather Friends

They call Austin the live music capital of the world. What some folks might not realize is that we've also got an abundance of world-class DJ talent. Just about any night of the week you can head downtown and catch one of these dudes spinning the best music you've never heard. Tomorrow night you can catch six of them under one roof, as the Mohawk hosts Red Bull Locally Thrown, bringing together DJ Manny , DJ Orion , PREPMODE , DJ BigFace , Richard Gear & DJ JE to spin their own remixes of [...]
