Why aren't we living in Sweden? While the prospect of great bands coming from there is hardly new, it would seem that 2010 will be the year of the Swedish invasion once again. Mono Stereo aim to be on board for the voyage and will certainly find their way into your heart. Shimmering guitars, throbbing bass lines and vocals that manage to rise above the beauty to add an atmosphere of dreamy bliss. While they rightfully acknowledge their Ride and My Bloody Valentine influences, we hear Postcard and Loop references that set them apart [...]

Violens Violent Sensation Descends Violens Already Over I'm a bit late on this, but in case you haven't come across it, or aren't familiar with them, New York's Violens have a free winter mix up for download on their website that includes a number of their own tracks, as well as some edit/cover-fuckery with artists like My Bloody Valentine , The Byrds , Xasthur , [...]

With all this talk of predictions for 2010 (mine coming soon), I thought it would be fun to look back at some big names' calls for 2009. Who made it, and who didn't, and which writers look smug and which have an eggy complexion? Here goes... BBC (Sound of 2009 longlist) The Big Pink, Dan Black, VV Brown, Empire of the Sun, Florence & the Machine, Frankmusik, Kid Cudi, La Roux, Lady GaGa, Little Boots, Master Shortie, Mumford & Sons, Passion [...]

Violens is a band with great taste. That, and it's not often a pop group can include Ulver and Burzum in their list of influences and find a way to back it up sonically. Outside the metal, their frozen blend of Durutti Column's spacious post-punk chills, Prefab Sprout's new wave atmospherics, Lilys-esque shoegaze-pop, and '60s psychedelia goes down very easy. I bring this up because after touring Europe and between, the New York quintet's put together a 14-song Winter Mixtape that hints at the map of their music collections. It opens with "Full Collision," a noisy and then Smiths-y song [...]

As you know, each year the BBC publishes a list of 15 artists who their panel of experts have decided are going to be haemorrhaging gold bullion by this time next year. Unsurprisingly, these longlists are always incredibly, even suspiciously, accurate. Take, for example, last year's list ; all of the artists who were named have gone on to have incredibly successful years. Of course, the exception to this rule is Master Shortie, who has gone on to make himself the target of unfair, but very enjoyable, jokes. Poor bloke. And why is this? Well, to a certain extent, [...]

[mp3] Class Actress: "Careful What You Say" Channeling that Italians Do It Better style of disco pop (see Glass Candy) - Class Actress are a product Chris Taylor's Terrible Records alongside of the much buzzed about Acrylics . Class Actress' debut EP Journal of Ardency comes out in February. Here is the lead single "Careful What You Say." It has that delicious European pop sound to it, with just enough melancholy and style to it to make it worthwhile and quite charmingly addictive. Class Actress play alongside of [...]

Long time fans of genre hoppers will definitely be pleased to hear that those clever kids in Violens are dropping a free Winter Mixtape for you on their web site . This little mixtape, and it's not that little, will probably win over fans, as the guys sing over My Bloody Valentine while playing over the Byrds . Sounds like nothing short of a guaranteed test of musical sanity. Unfortunately, it's a mixtape, so I can't throw a sample [...]
9 December, 2009 7:30 pm to 11:30 pm Who: Violens , Acrylics, Class Actress Where: Mercury Lounge Show Info: 21+, 7:30pm Doors, $10 Watch: Violens - "Already Over"
Tonight I am going to be arguably cooler than I usually am on most Monday nights, and go listen to the dramatic and addictive sounds of The Big Pink at Denver's Larimer Lounge. This duo from London (touring now with a rad female drummer) won NME's influential Philip Hall Radar Award at the Shockwaves NME Awards in February (for best new group) and have been slowly conquering the world since. With songs like this, I think it's easy to see why. Dominoes [...]

My recollections of the two Levi's OnestoWatch 5 night revues earlier this week veer from the hazy to the crystalline. Both events were heavily subscribed. Violens were undeservedly on first on Tuesday, their shimmering pop went down a treat. Crystal Fighters pulled out all the stops, whipping the crowd up into a melée that saw assorted Hoxton luminaries lose their shit. Not literally, the day after Clock Opera continued to cement their reputation as White Noise made its way into the record emporiums. Wolf Gang impressed sonically, though it was difficult to enjoy as a spectacle once my brain had [...]
