Words // Scott Pingeton New Years Resolution: Be better about reading emails + listening to artist submissions Somewhere along the way, reading through the blog's email started to feel like a chore...most likely because I get more emails about dub-step remixes and wanna-be pop stars than stuff that I might actually listen to. As a result of all this riff-raff, some worthwhile emails fall through the [...]
Just when you thought the best of 2011 lists were over, we went ahead and did it. I now hate lists and hate myself for posting this. But it must be done. This is a starting point, so leave your favorites in the comments and I'll keep adding mine as a run across 'em. Woody and I threw this list together over IM one day, so I"m sure plenty of good tracks are missing, but here were some of our favorite songs last year. Hands down, my favorite track of last year is "Boeing 737." I [...]

As I wrote just over a year ago in a 2-part feature on How To Be A Coverblogger [ Pt. 1 / Pt. 2 ], keeping a coverblog requires a touch of obsession, an itch to live the writing life, and a willingness to keep a keen eye on a select handful of trusted sources. But though we watch the other coverbloggers carefully throughout the year, we are folkies first and foremost here at Cover Lay Down. And - as we noted atop our year's end mix - some of the [...]

So our look back in the year in music brings us to September. Another month with a bunch to choose from, here are some of our favorites. This is 2011 Our Year In Sound; September. Tammar; Yung Jun Dive; Sometime The Morning Clouds; A Walk Home The Brian Jonestown Massacre; Hide & Seek Diehard; Diehard [...]

The NBC Tuesday night drama follows the ups and downs of the Braverman family. It's all-star cast features Peter Krause (Six Feet Under), Monica Potter, Lauren Graham and Craig T. Nelson as the crotchety, vietnam-era, hippie dad. It's a good solid show with some good storylines, but the best part of the hour each week is the music. The show is giving stellar unknown artists like Slaid Cleaves, James Blake ("A Case for You," a Joni Mitchell is one of the most interesting vocals ever), The Lennings (who deliver a slow, folky version of "You're the One That I Want" from Grease), Civil Wars, Fink, and [...]
![Best Albums of 2011 [HearYa's Top 50]](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/3926807_lg.jpg)
Here are the best albums of 2011 as chosen by our panel of experts (Woody, Shirk and I). I'm not a huge fan of ranking albums because my personal rankings are fluid and change depending on the time of year, my mood of the moment, and the album's propensity to get played again and again over time. Because we collaborated on the list, we each had to leave off some of our personal top 502s. In the end, man-to-man mud wrestling prevailed and we compromised. The unanimous top album among all of us was Tamer Animals [...]

Well here is our obligatory Best Albums Of '11 list. There were so many albums we loved this year and it is a shame we can't list them all, but here are our top 25. AA Bondy; Believers AA Bondy; Surfer King Amen Dunes; Through Monkey Jaw Amen Dunes; Christopher Arctic Monkeys; Suck It And See [...]

AA Bondy has made a new album, and the good news is it's not completely built from old, re-hashed styles. This time round the singer/songwriter digs deeper, letting his soul guide the music rather than his overt influences. His days of emulating Dylan and the great American folk textbook, which were admittedly still pretty good, are left on the roadside. Much here is like a late-night stroll through nostalgia, unwinding with a warm production and wayward delivery that somehow finds its way home. Opening with the almost hypnotic The Heart is Willing is a statement of intent, the [...]

A four-year whirlwind of solo success has uprooted AA Bondy 's life, but he has stayed true to his bluesy, folk foundation. After his band, Verbena, split in 2003, Bondy started writing songs that would ultimately construct the framework for his 2007 debut album, American Hearts . This album set a folk revival precedent evocative of Bob Dylan (but with much more agreeable vocals). His sweeping, acoustic finger-picking and nature-centric lyrics set a scenic stage that would be best illustrated by creeks, leaves, and mountains. It is easy for any listener to envision a rugged, tormented mountain man with [...]
Caveman shares what they're reading with Fader . Watch Feist's new video for "How Come You Never Go There" at Pitchfork . The track is easily one of my favorite songs of the year. All Things Considered interviews AA Bondy . Real Estate perform a Take Away Show on Paris train tracks.

Austin was fortunate enough to have AA Bondy and Gold Leaves playing their folk-influenced crafts over the speakers at the Parish on Sunday night. Let's face it, the venue has the best sound, and was perfectly fitting for each band's sound. Read on for more, including pics. Opening act Gold Leaves probably came out of the show with the most impact on the Austin audience. I've absolutely fallen in love with The Ornament since it landed over here [...]
I caught AA Bondy last night at the Parish in Austin. Bondy and his band played their new album, Believers in full and followed that with a handful of selections from American Hearts and When The Devil's Loose . AA Bondy is on the road supporting his fantastic new release, Believers . It's one of the year's best for sure. Bondy and his band tore through the High Noon Saloon last night in Madison and Dan brought back some great looking and sounding video. Above is "Surfer King," my favorite track from the aforementioned new record. Check out all the videos from last night including opening band and new discovery, Gold Leaves .
