As a member in of Montreal, Kishi Bashi not only played strings on the band's new album, Paralytic Stalks, but collaborated with Kevin Barnes as a producer as well - an experience which heavily influenced 151a, with Barnes pushing him to new heights of creativity and broader use of violin. The result of this push is Kishi Bashi's debut full-length, 151a , The album is set to be released on April 10, 2012 via Joyful Noise Recordings. The follow-up to his summer 2011 Room For Dream EP , 151a [...]

This list is a long time coming and a little later than I would have liked it to be, but I do not take lists lightly so I didn't want to rush it. For me 2011 was a great year in music. I have opened myself up and listened to a lot of stuff that I don't think I would have given a chance a couple of years ago. I also saw a fair amount of shows in 2011. Alexi Murdoch, The Decemberists, The Kills, James Vincent McMorrow and these are all albums I consider to have made up a [...]

The trouble with acoustic covers of popular songs is that some earnest singer armed with a guitar will slow down Jingle Bells and whisper the lyrics as if they have a deep meaning. I have no principles that compel me to disallow the notion of whispering songstresses, but on this Christmas mix I've tried to keep them to a respectful minimum. Still, we have the doses of yuletide angst which the acoustic genre prescribes to go with the upbeat welcome of the merry season. Don't be alarmed by the inclusion of three tracks called Christmas Song: they are [...]

Gregory Alan Isakov , a Colorado-based singer-songwriter originally from South Africa, has been playing on repeat on my Ipod recently. His four full-length albums released between 2003 and 2009 are impressive, having gained him two musical awards and a spot at numerous festivals including South by South West and the Falcon Ridge Folk Festival. Having had the privilege to play alongside bands such as Mumford and Sons, Brandi Carlile, Fiona Apple, and Alexi Murdoch, Gregory Alan Isakov has successfully established himself as a talented artist worth listening to. If you are a fan of indie/folk music, [...]

Alexi Murdoch is in an interesting position. If you've been a follower of popular culture in the last decade or so you've probably heard him. You just may not have heard of him. You see, almost every track of his 2006 debut album Time Without Consequence was plastered across US teen dramas and feature films, usually in one of two moments: the weepy bits or when a key character comes to (or spends time coming to) an important, life changing decision. He toured infrequently and took five years to make his follow-up, giving him [...]
Click here to view the video on YouTube. This delicate, yet upbeat track just released from UK songwriter Benjamin Francis Leftwich is reminiscent of Alexi Murdoch's Orange Sky. Its a gently almost whispered sung song that's heartfelt and warm. The balance of his guitar, his soft voice and gentle handclaps create a really wonderful sleepy feel. So I am just now sitting down to talk about the James Vincent McMorrow show at the Bootleg Theater on September, 24th... First off, can I just say that the Bootleg Theater is my new favorite venue. Super intimate and chill, but also totally LA. I love it. And I am really excited that they are adding some of my favorite singer-songwriters to their event lineup. This is the same theater where I saw my dearest Alexi Murdoch . William [...]

At this point in time I don't need to explain to you why I love Daytrotter or Alexi Murdoch as I've done that whole song and dance before. All you have to know is that the combination of the two is something worthy of any music lover's time and energy. The recordings themselves, along with the magnificently kind words of Daytrotter's Sean Moeller will be sure to have you yearning for Murdoch's music. So do yourself a favour and check out Some Day Soon and [...]

Hey. How's it going? Good, great. So, yeah, you might be new here. Maybe you're a freshman at Pitt or CMU or somewhere else. That's terrific and we applaud your good choice in city. But maybe you're not exactly new here, and you're finding yourself ready to explore the town and uncover it's wonders. You're like a goddamn pearl diver, ready to take the plunge and come up for air with a little bit of treasure. Well, we're here to help you with that whole situation. It could definitely seem like a staggering endeavor. We understand. We went through it [...]

This album had me from track 1. Jono McCleery strikes an excellent balance between vocal control and letting himself go to maintain the soulfulness. Picture the vocals of James Blake, but thicker, against the backdrop of Bonobo's earlier jazzy lo-fi albums (whom McCleery recently supported) and you've got a basic idea of this debut. These are the obvious comparisons, but the London based solo artist brings an originality to the table. The manipulation of sound and electronic elements of the music are played down and subtle, resulting in an underlying haunting mood beneath a Patrick Watson come Alexi [...]

vor ein paar tagen gab es schon eine nachlese zum haldern pop festival. abseits der bühne haben wir ein unterhaltsames interview mit alexi murdoch ...

There is a ton of new stuff out today. Way to much stuff for a person to listen to in the hopes of making sure that it's not total crap. I think I got rid of most of the crap but there might be some crap still in there. So if you find some crap just scrape is off your shoe and move along. Thanks for stopping by ya'll! 10 Ft. Beirut's new album The Rip Tide is Zach Condon's most introspective effort yet. Glen Campbell's Ghost On the Canvas features the veteran singer-songwriter covering songs by Paul Westerberg, Robert Pollard, and others. Live At KEXP: Volume Seven collects in-studio performances by Sharon Van Etten, The Tallest Man on Earth, The Head and the Heart and others, and benefits the Seattle public radio station. Among the rest of the releases, I can strongly recommend Dirty Beaches' [...]

Anna Calvi Sitting round the backstage campfire listening to La Brass Banda's tuba player running through a melancholy passage from Bach, we reflected on a Haldern that had an element of Sehnsucht as well as the usual industrial-strength dollops of hippy dippy Zuckerzeit . Maybe it was the weather, (glowering, leaden, ever-threatening), maybe it was the zealous and clearly alien security measures brought in, we believe, as a national response to the tragedy [...]

Quei [...]
