This month marks the 10th anniversary of Fluxblog. I will be doing a few things to celebrate the occasion over the course of the year, but the main thing is that I will be putting together survey mixes for each year the site has existed. The mixes will be released on the first weekday of each month this year, culminating in revised/expanded versions of the 2010 and 2011 mixes and this year's survey at the start of December. 2002 was an interesting year, with a lot of major stuff bubbling up as the identity of the decade [...]

Purling Hiss is a raging erection of rock 'n' roll - of pissed jeans, whiskey teeth and stoner garage that slithers, shakes and convulses in a bright fury of heavy groove. You can say it's what you'd expect from someone (and by someone, I mean Purling Hiss' mastermind, Mike Polizze) who spends time in Birds of Maya and chills with Kurt Vile , but, in Purling Hiss, Polizze stands on his own, digging his heels and making his own graphic mark (if anything, their releases - self-titled Purling Hiss (Permanent Records), Hissteria [...]

Originally from Wheaton, Illinois, the still unsigned Andrew Belle bares no scars of the big labels, and his last album ' The Ladder ' delivered his delicate vocals track after track. Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas may never appear side by side to Mariah Careys overplayed and over produced Christmas tracks, yet if i wanted to woo the girl of my dreams, Andrew would beat Mariah every time! We've covered Andrew's tracks in previous posts , so check them out. Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas

Tonight is Mister Heavenly 's debut Philly performance, and I've been looking forward to it for a long time now. If you didn't know already (then you probably really need to check out our site more often), the band is made up of madcap hometown son Honus Honus a.k.a. Ryan Kattner ( Man Man ), Nick Diamonds a.k.a. Nick Thorburn (Islands/Unicorns), and Joe Plummer (Modest Mouse/The Shins). Yes, that's quite a nice indie rock pedigree, but the band members didn't just ride the wave of hype that comes attached with their other projects. Instead, the trio sculpted a fantastic [...]

All Photos by Dragonfly JEN Photography For the benefit of anyone unfamiliar with the CF postcode – perhaps even that bit on the hip of merry ol' hip England we like to call home – for the past five years Sŵn Festival has served as Wales' only real ground level gathering of local, national, and international acts, as well as regional venues and promoters, filmmakers, poster artists, and avid music appreciators. Built around an ethos similar to that which drives Austin's SXSW or the CMJ Music Marathon, Sŵn is a music festival first, industry driven session [...]

Graphic by Katherine Speelman. As the seasons change, so do our listening habits. In much the same way we stuff our summer clothes to the back of our closets come winter, the shift in temperatures and scenery prompts us to dig up old favorites at specific points throughout the year. Autumn, a season where the leaves begin to crackle and the heat of summer gives way to breeze and chill, is no exception. At One Thirty BPM, we've already begun plucking old fall favorites from our collections. This is our seasonal soundtrack. [...]
In the late '90s, Boston-area jam band The Slip released an album called From the Gecko , with memorable jazz-rock songs anchored around the talented Brad Barr on guitar and vocals and his brother Andrew Barr on drums. Then, for the next 10 years, the band struggled to find its identity. Reinventing itself as an avant-garde, noisy art-rock band in the early 2000s, The Slip seemed to lose their crucial song-based approach to composing. Along the way, Andrew and Brad moved to Montreal and absorbed the city's cerebral, acoustic sound into their palette. Recording as The Barr Brothers [...]

The Waking Sleep is the fifth studio album by singer/songwriter Katie Herzig. Back in January, we posted Andrew Belle's song "Static Waves," which features this Grammy nominated singer. Herzig left her home state of Colorado in 2006 and headed for the "Music City" of Nashville, Tennessee to begin her solo career. Since then, she has released five albums and even toured with the fellow Colorado-based group, The Fray. Listen to "Way To The Future," then grab a copy of this album via the iTunes link below. Well, not in this post, are you insane? So sorry if that title got your hopes up, but STAY TUNED. For some reason, now that the full lineup has been released , I've decided it would be a good idea to post a song from every act playing our fine, fog-filled City's premier music festivus. Obviously this is going to be a lot of songs! I am slow at the writing of posts at the best of times, so most of these songs will show up as "mini-posts" in the side bar, but hopefully I'll have a few of [...]

The last couple of mornings biking to work, I could tell there is a change in the seasons coming. The air is crisper, cleaner, bluer. The college kids are back at school and those youngsters are getting for the day after Labor Day. All this means is summer is rapidly coming to a close. Enter The Milk Carton Kids. Two guys (Kenneth Pattengale and Joey Ryan) who remind me of a cross between Gillian Welch and David Rawlings with Simon and Garfunkel. Their harmonies are lovely. Their acoustic guitar plucking is flawless. Their music makes me yearn for [...]

Parliamone.
Oh dear, it's so freaking hot out--so hot, just opening your window to conserve energy will give you a heat stroke. We probably won't see a break from this scorching weather for a while (thanks climate change!) but if you're willing to brave the raging sun and possibility of getting shot in Camden (come on, you live in Philly), sweat your way to the 2011 XPoNential Music Festival at Wiggins Park on the Waterfront. The weekend-long fest will feature a slew of scary talented local acts like crowd (and Deli) favorites [...]
I don't remember where or when it was exactly, but I recently heard the soulful strains of Montreal's The Barr Brothers on CBC Radio and thought to myself, "I'm going to have to check these guys out further". Before I could even get to my computer, I'd already had a message sitting in my inbox telling me that the band has signed to Secret City Records and is releasing their self-titled debut on September 27. How's that for efficiency? The brothers, Brad (guitar, vox, keys) and Andrew (drums, percussion) Barr, [...]
