In 2009, we were exposed to some terrific music from lots of new, promising bands. As a whole, the year went very well with albums from Animal Collective, Phoenix, Porcupine Tree, Engineers, and Camera Obscura which littered most year-end lists. On top of that though, we were blessed with some gems that didn't have as [...]

Elizabeth Harper went from coffeehouse singer-songwriter to melodramatic and heavy electronic influenced she-popper overnight. Well not literally a 24 hour transformation but the Brooklyn native who now uses the Class Actress moniker has reinvented herself with a radiant bravado which is eminent on her 802s glam effort debut ' Rapprocher .' H.Q. Before Class Actress you did a lot of great solo work do you feel that you've found your sound? Class Actress : I think so, It seems to suit me more [...]

London quintet Bombay Bicycle Club has always straddled the sound of folk and rock, but their latest record "A Different Kind of Fix" (out now A&M/Octone Records) showcases yet another different movement in their sound. With the help of producers Jim Abbiss and Ben H. Allen (Animal Collective, M.I.A.), Bombay Bicycle Club has expanded their sonic palette via layers, loops and repetition. Their music video for "How Can You Swallow So Much Sleep" illustrates the fluidity in their songs. Directed by their friend Anna Ginsburg, the stop animation clip features a protagonist and his dreams by whimsically focusing [...]
Here's an uplifiting video for your Thursday afternoon, the atmospheric Iron Deer Dream by Oxford quintet Fixers . The band formed in 2011, recieving rave review of their synth based multi-track harmonies. Continually recieving comaparisons to the wonderful Animal Collective , the band do not dispell the rumours by citing them as an influence to MUZU . See below for a list of their favourite songs, past and present which displays a list of eclectic and diverse musicians and genres, spanning centuries of music. 1. Eurythmics - Shame 2. Hamish [...]

Montage Populaire – 'Reject Reinstall' Experimental glam pop from UK. These fellas are new on the block, yet act like they own it - convincingly. This song is boisterous, melodic, and inventive with a jovial, harmonious chorus, noisy breaks that channel the art rock of Roxy Music , and playful synth sounds that are reminiscent of Olivia Tremor Control or of Montreal . 'Reject Reinstall' is the lead track from their debut EP Not All Bombs Explode. Can't wait for this one... [...]

ARTIST: Gotye - [Album] DATE: 02-01-12 REVIEW BY: Nicole Beckley If there's a canon of musicians who craft music driven by experimentations in sound – Dirty Projectors, Animal Collective, Tune-Yards – it would only make sense to add Gotye to that list. Gotye (pronounced "gore-ti-yeah," or "Gaultier," as in the [view more]

1. EMA - Past Life Martyred Saints (Souterrain Transmissions) Listen: Anteroom Martyrs are not victims. There is no self-pity or cool detachment to their pain. Past Life Martyred Saints is an intimate but uncomfortable album, it will make you feel guilty for the hearts you've torn apart and it will make you feel weak for all the times you've been hurt and felt victimized for it. 2. Colin Stetson - New History Warfare Vol. 2: Judges [...]

31 year-old Graham Hill has had his fair share of experiences and successes. He's performed with Beach House and Papercuts on tour, and even contributed to Beach House's excellent Teen Dream . Now out on his own with his Roman Ruins project, Graham shows he's more than a live/studio drummer... so, so much more than that. Roman Ruins - Mighty Love "Mighty Love" is the first single from Roman Ruins' debut album Homebuilding , a [...]

Channeling their best Animal Collective impression, Fixers also indulge some food fantasies in the video for 'Iron Deer Dream'. The Oxford band explain: "We are charged with helping an elderly gentleman who seems to have a terrible case of Rice Krispie-itis. So we fly him to a deserted island where [Read more]
Feel the Sound , Imperial Teen's fifth long-player, is an agreeable piece of middle-of-the-road indie pop. Nothing more. And that ain't a bad thing, necessarily. Some indie rock bands want to make a serious artistic statement. Think Animal Collective, Arcade Fire, maybe Grizzly Bear, and the Antlers and go on from there. Then there are indie pop acts who just want to make something that's fun and bubbly. Into that category you can throw Imperial Teen, originally based in San Francisco but whose members have spread out across the continental United States. Their fifth full-length, and first in five [...]
The Fixers have been gaining a lot of steam since I introduced them back in August . This is their third and latest single from their upcoming debut We'll Be The Moon . Painfully, the opening of the track has been receiving a lot of comparisons to Animal Collective . In a short 30 seconds it gets to some original goodness though.

Tweet January has come and gone. In some parts of the world Lana Del Rey 's "Born To Die" has already been released to mixed reviews, nowhere near making as big a splash as was anticipated by some. I've given it a listen, it's fine, but, as I expected, nothing remarkable. In not-LDR-related news, there have been plenty of good releases so far in this past month, with Cloud Nothings [...]
Even as the term indie rock has lost much of its meaning in the 21st century, some of its ethos remain. Number one is be real. Number two, if you want to gain admission to our exclusive club, you better be real and wear our clothes, speak our lingo, and work our shitty jobs. Number three, if you're not going to be real, you better be really fucking good, like Animal Collective meats Radiohead produced by Outkast with cameos from Kanye and Kelly Clarkson good. The problem with Lana Del Rey, is not that she is a [...]

Expensive Looks' Dark Matters conjures an imagined 80s, like watching a late night re-run of The Breakfast Club after the gin's kicked in. What main-man Alec Feld does is reconstitute moments of 80s-ness, with the added charm that they never quite solidify. Opener Nothing More utilises pleasant glistening-sea-surface synths with the kind of singing/yelling practised by Animal Collective. By adding a massive cold echo to all the vocals, Feld distances the material from obvious emotion – there isn't any lyrical engagement throughout this record, nor is that important to how Expensive Looks work. [...]

Candy Claws sound like a futuristic drum circle. Often using bells and layered vocals, their tracks are lush and dreamlike. They've maintained a quiet presence on the dream pop scene, but stay connected to fans with active social networking profiles. They're most often compared to Animal Collective and Pet Shop Boys, but their sound is distinct and likenesses don't really do them justice. Based out of Fort Collins, Colorado, Candy Claws consists of two core members, and three peripheral members. Their first album, "In the Dream of Sea Life" received a very positive, albeit muted, response from the [...]
