And if it can rupture eardrums and upset my equilibrium just by listening to it, I'm usually in my happy place. That's why I was surprised to find Low Roar's debut album with its haunting melodies so intriguing. Having already drawn comparisons to the mellower offerings of Radiohead, Jeff Buckley and Sigur Rós in reviews, I also heard flashes of Brian Eno in that first listen. The band's backstory is no less interesting. Formerly of [...]

Singer Ryan Karazija moved to o Reykjavík, Iceland, after a stint as a member of Audrye Sessions turned into a disappointment in terms of sales and critical recognition. His one-man project is called Low Roar and his self-titled debut is a lonesome record - he is kicking out his demons one at the time. His self-imposed exile has garnered him an album with songs channeling the musings of Radiohead and Sigur Rós. No more signs of the major label trying to lead him to commercial success. [...]

Tweet Low Roar have created a mournfully sober yet artfully resigned soundtrack for a cold winter void of hope and shaded with longing. To draw from the main nerve in sadness and actually turn it into such a beautiful caliginous sound is rare and poignant and beautiful. Although even darker, " Friends Make Garbage, Good Friends Take It Out " has a sound very similar to " Dust Of Retreat " from Margot And The Nuclear So And Sos , [...]

If the geographical location that the band call home and the music that they generate is a perfect fit, does it enhance your experience when listening to them? Perhaps it's just our stereotyping of people from cities and countries that clouds our view, but would The Beatles have been the same if they'd come from Southampton, instead of that well-known northern city of chipper, fast and loose Scousers? Would Radiohead seem the same if they were associated with Birmingham, instead of the quaint and intellectual city of Oxford? Does the home of the band influence the music? With today's new [...]

Ryan Karazija - Low Roar To some, it's unfair - even blasphemy - to compare anyone's vocals to those of Thom Yorke. Back in 2008, multiple critics were doing just that when describing Audrye Sessions' frontman Ryan Karazija's singing style. When I interviewed him in 2008, he had this to say about the comparisons: "I think about that a lot. And I don't know what I think because it's fucking Thom Yorke. That's great. Cool. He's fucking amazing. But there's also a thing that stresses me out about it. [...]
