The members of La Femme are from Biarritz, a beach resort town in France. But even if you weren't aware of this biographical detail before listening to their debut LP, opener "Antitaxi" would make this abundantly clear, what with its shouted French lyrics, surf shack guitars, and wheezing organ drones. Right from the start, this band lays all its cards on the table. And that table was built by Stereolab. The comparison is almost too easy to make, especially once we hear Brittany-based singer Clémence take over lead vocal duties on "Amour Dans le Motu," which also features [...]

Having already staged two South American legs this year, one of North America’s biggest live music events will return to home soil in the summer with over 160,000 festivalgoers with Lollapalooza tickets expected to descend upon Chicago’s Grant Park on the weekend of Aug 2-4. Several acts who performed at the Brazilian date at Sao Paulo’s The Jockey Club in March and the Chilean version at Santiago’s Parque O’Higgins in April will grace the Lollapalooza stage for a second, and in some cases third, time in the space of six months including Queens Of The Stone Age, Two [...]

You probably know them from their 1999 hit My Own Worst Enemy, or perhaps from that music video where they get eaten by Pamela Anderson. Well since then Lit have been through some huge ups and downs, and have written about it all in their new aptly titled album 'The View From The Bottom'. Ahead of their shows at London's Koko as well as at Download, Sam Elliot catches up with founding member and guitarist Jeremy Popoff of the band Lit to talk about the band's past, present and future. SE: I'd [...]

Here's another massive release from OFF RECORDINGS . This three-track EP, features the Faceless Recordings founders of CLIMBERS , SILKY , and BARBER . Collectively their work stands on its own but together the tri-pack of house aficionados punch out a dichotomous day versus night paradigm that should leave you seeing stars, regardless of the time of day. To top it off, JAYMO & ANDY GEORGE [...]
Lots of acts have copped the girl group and '60s vibes over the last decade or so to varying degrees of success, whether drenching classic pop structures in lush harmonies or simply recording their tunes in a garage for that lo-fi sound. Few, though, have the raw material that Shannon and the Clams can bring to that task, first and foremost being Shannon Shaw's captivating and genre-accurate vocal delivery. Rather than dipping a toe into retro stylistics, the San Fransiscans dive into the deep end on Dreams in the Rat House . "Rip Van Winkle" shines particularly [...]

Shannon And The Clams: Dreams In The Rat House - Not quite retro enough for rockabilly and a bit too vintage for prog rock, Shannon And The Clams , the Oakland-based garage trio helmed by one-time Hunx and the Punx singer Shannon Shaw, is a bit of a mystery. So rather than try to sum up their sound with some overly hyphenated adjective, I’ll just put it like this. Shannon and the Clams is what rockabilly would sound like – wait for it – in the future. The rockabilly portion [...]

Sometimes you discover artists that have been around for ages and you feel stupid for not having found out about them earlier. This happened to me with Michael Jackson. No, I’m kidding. But it happened to me with Lightning Dust today and by what I’ve heard so far it’s too bad I hadn’t found out earlier. On the other hand, I have lots of new music to listen to now. The song that made me discover Lightning Dust, a side-project of rock group Black Mountain, is Diamond , [...]
It's a packed Tuesday, y'all... ► The Black Angels roar through Los Angeles and headline the Mayan Theatre. Expect to hear some songs off of their new record "Indigo Meadow." L.A.'s very own garage doo-wopper Hanni El Khatib supports alongside Parisian psych-rock trio Wall of Death . ► Australian electro duo the Presets play the Avalon in support of their latest album "Pacifica." That's their video for "Fall" above, and Canadian electro-pop band Dragonette opens. ► Laura Marling returns to the Masonic Lodge at [...]

Here's an epic track from the Antime label compilation that's defined as synthtec. Midimum is label boss Martin Steer and Junk Beach is an odd beast. It merges big synth sounds with a tech house dryness and a little psychedelia. There's nothing shy or bashful about the track, it wants to be big and all encompassing. Succeeds. There's also a Last Minute version of the track, which halves the length and includes vocals. Makes more of the beach techno and psychedelic nature of the track but something gets lost in translation. Stick to the original. [...]

"My parents grew up on opposite sides of the globe, coming from different circumstances and world-views. Despite their life’s hardships and trials, music was salvation even in the most remote of places." "My mother recounts growing up in the 60s and 70s in the Cayman Islands where the rest of the world seemed like a distant dream and records were a rare treasure, brought home by the men at sea and visitors from far away. She danced to the sounds of Harry Belafonte, The Beach Boys, and Bob Marley. Meanwhile, [...]

Friends since they were children, Jessica Davies and Katherine Blamire of Smoke Fairies have grown up sharing similar musical tastes and influences. Bonding over their parents’ guitars and Jessica’s mother’s vinyl collection, the two women seemed bound together through this shared musical history. You can hear the sound of two artists working in tandem as Davies and Blamire work out their own frustrations, as well as a new found sense of confidence, amid detailed descriptions of cross-country road trips and the suffocating nature of becoming stationary, both physically and spiritually. Their sophomore LP Blood Speaks deals with how [...]

“The city for me has always been this Oz, this weird, slightly out-of-reach world,” Matt Berninger, 42, says from the backseat of a Town Car. His gaze shifts to the rain-speckled rear window as the driver merges onto the FDR. It's half past noon. "When I first moved here, Scott [Devendorf] and I and like three other people from our school shared a studio apartment where we all slept in sleeping bags on the floor on East 60th, right underneath the Queensboro Bridge. I was just walking around the first week and I looked down the street, and I saw [...]
