Russian Circle's third release, Geneva , starts out as such a damned promising record, coming out of the chute with 3 of their thickest, heaviest, and most memorable tunes yet. But through poor pacing and scatter shot stylistic change ultimately the album feels like a disappointment and a missed opportunity. Past albums have worked by gradually ratcheting down the pace such as Talking Heads' Remain In Light , but Geneva's diminishing returns don't pack much of a dramatic punch. [...]

It's been a while since a really solid concept album has been around. Sure a lot of bands use running themes throughout albums today, but you rarely see a full story told in an album. We seemed to have overlooked this when it came out, but Pterodactyl Squad, a "videogame music net label" released an 8-bit Weezer tribute album last month. The compilation features Anamanaguchi, Bit Shifter, nordloef and many more covering some of Weezer's greatest. Power pop has always lent itself nicely to 8-bit music, and this is no exception. Weezer's melodies fit in perfectly with the bleeps and bloops of the genre and the rhythms sound perfectly fine fuzzed and thrashed. It's a fun listen for any Weezer fan. The 8-bit Album is the kind of project that I'd usually ignore. I'm not really a fan of entire compilations of covers or remixes, even if it's of one of my favourite bands by a bunch of bands I've never heard of. And if that wouldn't put me off, this almost certainly would: "The songs on this compilation have mostly been created using original videogame hardware running home-brew software, and vary radically in style, from minimal 'one man and his Game Boy' compositions to 8-bit inspired full band performances." Various Artists: Weezer - The 8-bit Album I question whether any band that is still making music has had more tribute albums dedicated to them than Weezer. This is at least the fourth Weezer tribute album I am aware of, but it also might be the most unique concept. Rather than the trite "we were influenced by Weezer, now let me do my best Rivers' impression", Pterodactyl Squad puts out this album of Weezer tunes done by various Nintendo-sounding bands.
