Phew. It has taken until now to recover from the awesomeness of the weekend. First off, Friday night at Gigantic was another busy sesh. Bit of a random night, but there were plenty of regulars down giving it stacks, which was nice. The first track I'm posting up was one that I started to play for Gillian Gillespie, but that randomly cut out before the end. Gah! It's a great track that I've been looking to post up anyway, so this was a good excuse. It's M.I.A. 'Bad Girls'. M.I.A. - Bad Girls (right [...]

One year ago for our tenth anniversary, we took a little break . A sabbatical. After six months with nary a peep, we quietly started publishing stuff again. And we've been posting stuff fairly regularly since then. The break was nice. It gave us time to migrate from MovableType to WordPress. We also switched hosts from Hostrocket to Dreamhost. And then switch back to Hostrocket after Dreamhost couldn't power our decade-worth of content with their measly 8MB of PHP memory. Our break also gave us some time to think about why we do this [...]

First Aid Kid - Emmylou A few years ago, two Swedish sisters posted a cover of Fleet Foxes' Tiger Mountain Peasant Song on YouTube and their name, First Aid Kit, spread quickly across the internet. Now, some four years later, the two sisters, Klara and Johanna Söderberg released their sophomore album, The Lion's Roar . From that first Fleet Foxes' cover, you could tell these girls had the harmonies, voices and talent to be more than just a YouTube sensation. Their first album, The Big Black and The [...]

Much ado has been made – progressively emphatically – about the sparsity within the work of the almost unfeasibly juvenile Nicolas Jaar . First and foremost the hype and hubbub around tonight's sold out show in the capital's finest musically-orientated establishment is, superficially, equally inconceivable: commuters haggle for spares on bustling tubes and every spluttered word centres upon the man who, at the wondrously tender age of twenty-two, is over to showcase his very own label and multimedia outlet, Clown & Sunset. The venue itself meanwhile is ideal in that it is later to give superlative sounds from the [...]

Heems - Nehru Jackets Greedhead: 2012 At this point I think it's safe to say that one of Das Racist's primary objectives is to confront American bohemia with its own undeniable whiteness. This is water under the bridge for a lot of us. Scanning a room to discover I'm the token black guy at whatever event I'm attending is a persistent reality for me that's passed the point of being interesting. (People of color just don't fuck with independent music as much for whatever reason. Nobel Prize to [...]

Und natürlich auf Toni Traubensaft und sein Cello, die ihm auf "I see things that you don´t see and that is blue, blue, black and Dylan" zur Seite stehen. Mehr davon? Gibt's bei Siluh Records . If there's one thing Hugh Platt it's shit-stirring. This whole Black Sabbath/Bill Ward situation has seen him dig out a very large spoon. By now you've no doubt have heard that Bill Ward is - at the time of writing at least - no longer going to be taking part in either the recording of the new Black Sabbath album or the corresponding world tour. This situation all kicked off on Thursday, when Bill Ward published a statement , detailing why he might be forced [...]

Life is funny. Every day can be an adventure. You work hard all day and then you spend your nights and weekends pursuing your hobbies and passions. And it all seems to be pretty much the same ol' thang… And then one day you meet a special someone. You date, fall in love, get married…and eventually the "kids question" comes up. You both agree the time is right and so you decide to "try." And the next thing you know, she's pregnant and your whole world is about to get turned upside [...]

There are a lot of little indie labels doing great things these days, but one of the most consistently impressive is What's Your Rupture? Records based in NYC. Run by Kevin ("no big deal") Pedersen, the label has remained defiantly independent and impeccably curated since its inception in 2003. Iceage. Cold Cave. Love Is All. Comet Gain. These are all bands that bear the What's Your Rupture? imprimatur. When asked what makes him decide to sign certain bands, Kevin once said it's when, "You're sure that a song is the best thing [...]

Without retreading what has already been beaten to death here , there , and everywhere else , Black Metal has come a long way. As time marches on we break down the changes into waves, then scenes. USBM, Cascadian Black Metal, Post-Black Metal-they're all outgrowths of what has come before and the way creativity continues to push artists and musicians endlessly forward. As the mainstream media gradually acknowledges Black Metal and its many-headed offspring, it is inevitable that the genre will bleed into other, more commercial styles. And vice-versa. Tonight's show at the Echoplex, in the Echo [...]
This great track from Newbury Park, California's The Neighbourhood premiered on BBC Radio 12s Zane Lowe show the other night, and the black & white video shot by Zack Sekular and the band premiered at NME on Tuesday. Yes, the winged miscreants at Pigeons & Planes and those foreign guys at HYPETRAK scooped me on The Neighborhood , there is very little known about the vague and mysterious 4 member outfit. That songwriting and production is undeniable. It combines my favorite parts of sweeping Brit Rock serenades [...]

Illustration: Abi Heyneke I've been reading a lot about Lana Del Rey lately. You have too. You've heard about her past as Lizzy Grant, her "image change" and "lip enhancement," and of course her notorious Saturday Night Live performance . You've watched as she suddenly went from being put on a pedestal as a media darling to being tied to the whipping post. How did it happen? Why did we all of a sudden decide to collectively stop liking Lana Del Rey? Is it because she isn't talented? Is [...]
