by Benn Ray I have long argued that those who say taxes are inherently prohibitive and have a dampening affect on business don't understand the nature of business. Where there is the potential for profit to occur, there will always be enterprise. Corporate, Republican and Libertarian talking points have long argued that only lower tax rates will result in enterprise and only that will generate more jobs and a healthy economy. We even see this in local economies where special tax breaks are offered to entice large corporate entities to open big [...]

Darren Hayman is one of the true talents of British songwriting. His tales of drunkenness, unfaithfulness, teen obsession and uniquely English manners and social interactions have seen him brought to the bosom of a dedicated following, many of whom were won over initially by the mighty personal pop of Hefner. That Hefner were a band beloved by their fans and that many of those fans remain steadfastly faithful to Hayman's work, whatever form it takes, is a testament to his winning charm. That Hefner were the critical darlings and oft-tipped for stardom during [...]

I've already waxed on about just how much this Lyle fellow manages to blow me away. Get ready, I'm gonna do it again... Today, a woman died. She was a woman without any family to speak of, her mother having died years ago, leaving her father and her to frantically and very seriously mourn her loss for years upon years. Her father, a man named Jack, possessed the ability to put his finger on a stack of one dollar bills and tell me exactly how many there were. He was 80 and his mind was a dagger. Late [...]

Punks Jump Up are a modern-day dream team that came together a few years back while they were both living in London. The duo consists of Joe and David, who together possess a musical power that generates magic on track after track. 2011 was a milestone year for PJU. They released Chimes Pt. 1 to critical acclaim and remixed everyone from Housse de Racket to the Supermen Lovers. These uber stylish lads also found time to work with graphic designer Michael Willis on Stiff Couture , their clothing line that helps bros from all over the world [...]

I have heard rumblings that there is a MASSIVE LAW that is being talked about in some sort of branch of the government that is trying to make websites and blogs and the majority of the content on the internet COMPLETELY ILLEGAL. I was reading up about SOPA, trying to exactly who it would impact. Here are the hard facts on SOPA, how it works, and how your life will be forever changed in the SOPA world. ALL MUSIC BLOGS WOULD BE BREAKING THE LAW Did u know that 100% of music [...]

This is a great track. I can't listen to it without smiling- partially because I've been anticipating this album so much. I basically idolize The Hold Steady , which many of you probably understand. Minimalism. It seems to be the theme for 2012. I've been reading all sorts of blog posts and articles about people cleaning out their inboxes, unsubscribing from mailing lists, unfollowing blogs, deleting their cable, uninstalling apps from their mobile devices, and throwing out unnecessary items. I've gone through occasional purges in my life: stepping away from social media, canceling magazine subscriptions, throwing out old clothes by the bin-ful, chopping off my hair. There is something cathartic about cleaning out your real and digital life. A clean slate makes us feel ready to take on more challenges, start something new, and [...]

Day Two of Jam Cruise is a full day at sea which translates to an all-you-can-eat buffet worth of incredible music. In the past I've embraced the ADD nature of the vacation by bouncing between the ship's four venues, but yesterday I tried a different approach and caught three full sets - something unheard of me for me in previous years. By the time the clock had struck 5AM and I finally headed to bed, the musical buffet had left me stuffed and extremely satisfied. With so many superbly talented musicians on board, each act tries to top each other [...]

If you have a brick and mortar record store, you get a free ad. If you've got a Kickstarter in the works for a project we endorse, let's have that be known. Playing a gig? Let's get the word out. So, it thrills me to no end to kick off [...]

I am not doing predictions, mostly because I can't. I have no idea what is going to be big this year and what isn't, and even if I think a band is going to release something amazing that probably doesn't matter, because bands I love rarely ever get all that famous anyway. But in any case, and in no particular order, here are some things I liked about last year, and some things I didn't. Some stuff I'd like to see more of and some things I am looking forward to, and some things I am not. "Something [...]
A fair while in the making, Serious About Men neatly ties together nine years' worth of pranking, hip-hop and social commentary from the manic bag-wearing anti-heroes that are The Rubberbandits . Their comic caricatures have become a controversial yet well-loved reflection of many aspects of Irish society over their last few successful years, showing a grotty but relatable reflection. Happily, in interview the pair – Blindboy Boatclub and Mr Chrome – have no trouble delivering every bit of that charisma, whether they're talking about their politics or their fixation with the duality of [...]
