Central Park Summerstage Ahh, summer outdoor shows. As this is my first summer in New York City, when I think of summer concerts I think of the cool summer nights that I grew comfortable with in Seattle, with the marine air and the lush grass accompanying the music. Not so in New York. Wednesday's show at Central Park Summerstage was hot and humid and increasingly smelly. I arrived and immediately bee-lined for the bleachers so as to avoid the sweaty masses. Because the only thing worse than bathing [...]

Imagine you're wading up to your waist in a cool, clean lake, soft sand beneath your feet, the evening sun bathing your shoulders, the joyous beats of a Finnish reggae band wafting over you and filling the nearby pine trees. This is a festival experience unlike any other... this is the Ilosaarirock Festival in Joensuu, Finland. Finland, being the particularly heavy metal driven country it is, has many quality music festivals during the year but Ilosaarirock can't be beat for its history (2011 will be its 40th anniversary), its gorgeous setting on the shores of a tranquil river, [...]
hell yeah! An interesting weekend. I guess some folks out there are only going to want to hear about the "controversial ending". I guess I could start backwards. I may write about the ending first and then write about the show chronologically. I will say first the absurdity level of a "double elimination battle of the bands" (think about it...) was supposed to be a signifier that the purpose of the show was not about whos gonna win the $$$ ... the purpose was to have fun and to try and [...]

Most of you know her as Lady Gaga, but not to long ago she was just Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta, a rising star living in New York City. Born into an Italian family, Lady Gaga attended Convent of the Sacred Heart, a private Catholic school in Manhattan. She told Allure Magazine that she used to sneak red lipstick and apply it to stand out from the day to day uniform. By 14 she started to perform open mic nights and soon after that got early admission to NYU's Tisch School of the Arts. [...]

Props to the comforting tunes of Idiot Glee [and the smell of the french toast my roomie made] for getting me up this morning, 6:30am is a harsh buzzkiller. Bathing in the aura of a boy mixing Beach Boys and Grizzly Bear on his record player, Idiot Glee's first taste of tunes are getting me so psyched for 2010... I might not even listen to anything else for the rest of the year. Just toss these tunes in a playlist with Memoryhouse and call it a day! James says there's a "7inch set for late February w/ 'All [...]

So, I don't know if I've already mentioned this enough already, but I'm going to NEW YORK on Sunday for a week of tomfoolery and Big Apple based fun. We've also chosen this week in particular to head across the sea as it's CMJ Music Marathon and there are some pretty fucking cool bands playing. A fair few that we've featured on this here blog in fact. Hooray for us and coolness! But, my problem is I just can't process this list of bands who are playing. There are too many for my [...]

Rihanna was filming her new photo shoot for her upcoming album in Berlin yesterday, and boy was her hair and coat making quite the statement! As Tom Cruise would say, "Change, I think that coat is wearing you." Her hair was defying gravity, leading me to believe that she needs to fire her stylist or something ! And is that real fur? Good God, what on Earth is she wearing underneath the coat, [...]
CMJ released the band schedule for its 2009 Music Marathon & Film Festival yesterday, which is about as good a sign of fall hitting New York as the return of apple cider at Greenmarket. The festival runs from Oct. 20 - Oct. 24 and includes various venues throughout the city, and the list of featured artists would probably take all four days to read through. But skimming the selection reveals a fairly equal distribution of well-known acts like Atlas Sound and Deer Tick , anonymous locals (including krautrock-y Jeff Buckley-channelers Pocketknife), twenty-two bands who [...]
The press release below doesn't actually list all the acts performing at CMJ this year, so you're probably better off checking out cmj.sched.org to get a true idea of what's happening during this year's marathon. Of course, sched.org is a little confusing too and it doesn't list unofficial events and day parties (as far as I know), so you'll have to wait a little bit longer for info to trickle out from the blogs and other unofficial sources. Lastly, even though the press release says the schedule is "final", you can pretty much bet that things will shift [...]

Oh boy, the new BAPEX watches are sick! Now you're normally used to seeing watches like this made of metal right? Wrong! Not this time around. These are made out of a clear plastic material and come in two colorways; light green and orange and packaged in a specially made clear case. If you have grand canyon deep pockets you can cop these at Bape stores around the world in limited quantities. (Via: FreshnessMag )

( BACK TO PART ONE ) Hell and High Water (1954, 103 minutes)(buy/ rent ) "I shall try my best to make you like me... as a scientist." A private consortium suspects that nuclear activity is occurring in on an island in the neutral waters of the North Pacific. They hire a mercenary WWII vet (Richard Widmark) to captain a submarine for a recon mission. Packed in the tin can are a full crew of sweaty men and one va-va-voomish French scientist. [...]
