The Lonely Forest had one of our favorite releases last year with Arrows, and with Arrows' debut on vinyl just this past Tuesday, we've invited the band to hang out with us all week in a celebration of what we tend to call in these parts a "crowning achievement." We've been talking records all week with the guys in the band and we still have a chance for one of you to get your hands on a copy of Arrows on vinyl. Today, as [...]

O clipe mostra Ben Gibbard , [...]

The Lonely Forest have created the type of record that you used to play over and over again and never got tired of. It's a lost art these days in a world of single downloads and rampant piracy. It sometimes makes you wonder why bands even record 10 songs anymore—that is, until you hear Arrows. These Washington state natives have made a tremendous album stylistically picking from three decades of musical references, the 80s, 90s, and early 2000s. "Discovered" by Death Cab For Cutie's Chris Walla and signed to his Atlantic Records [...]

"We tend to do things the same way. We aren't super adventurous". Thus spake Nada Surf drummer Ira Elliot nearly three years ago on this very site, at that point discussing their last full-length, Lucky . Now, there's no need to use a quote taken out of context as a rod with which to beat a band half to death with – and yet here we are. Nada Surf are a band that actively prefer playing acoustic sets to full band gigs, and whose records from a decade ago sound nearly identical [...]

<!-- --> Click here for download Sounds like: Death Cab For Cutie, The Naked And Famous Song: Now, Now - School Friends [download here ] What's so good? Refreshing, simple - refreshingly simple. Short and sweet, but not sweet like Mandy's candy (almost forgot that one, didn't you?). No, more [...]

I've been obsessing over Now, Now's new track "School Friends" since it premiered on RollingStone.com a few days ago, just like I did with "Dead Oaks" when it came out last month, and just like I do over everything they touch. "School Friends" has the quintessential happy melancholia that I long for, paired with always perfect vocals and dead on instrumentation. With every new track they release, Now, Now are leading up to this amazing new record ( Threads , out March 6th on Chris Walla's Trans-Records) that might be this year's best. [...]
"Death Cab is, Alex," Tricia announced. I disagreed. We were discussing indie rock bands of the last decade. "No, they are just an alternative rock band," I objected. "Well, indie rock is really a sub-genre of alternative rock, isn't it? So, why don't you consider Death Cab an indie rock band?" she remonstrated. " I felt cornered. I mean, what is an indie rock band anyway? I replied, "In 2004 they signed with Atlantic Records, a subsidiary of Warner Music Group. Atlantic is hardly an independent label." Tricia [...]
Tuesday, January 10, 2012 Today's Quick Mention: In case you missed it, my Top 50 Films of 2011 list is up over in the film section. Do me a favor and check it out. Noah, my film-writing cohort, will have his list up later this week. And now, the end of what we missed while we were away. Enjoy. : Sleigh Bells - Born To Lose : I have to admit I thought [...]

Up until compiling this list, I was pretty sure 2011 was not a fantastic year for music. Well, I may have been completely wrong. There might not have been giant releases from the most prominent artists of our generation, but this is only because there are no more prominent artists of our generation. The internet and availability of music has made anybody a contender for making a great record, and I believe it has become a complete toss up as to who makes a future classic in any given year. Relax, for this is a good thing. Here's my big [...]

The last 2011 song is by the Springfield, Missouri bases Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin. They have recently released their forth album. Tape Club documents the story of the band aurally, beginning with lo-fi home recordings (of the type found on their self-recorded debut Broom ) and ending with more polished studio tracks (like those found on the Chris Walla-produced Let It Sway ). For those unfamiliar with Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin, Tape Club serves as an introduction to the evolution of the band's [...]

As our list continues, we not only were able to find some of the best songs this year, but were floored with some new discoveries as well as some returning ones. Enjoy our Top 100 Songs of 2011 as our list continues. 75. Germany Germany - Intro IV (Order/Disorder) Crisp loops and melodies were easy to swallow here. Germany Germany's 2011 album, Adventures , was certainly that. This whole album showed much promise and replayability throughout 2011. 74. The Pear Traps - Home As simple [...]
Bon Iver, August 2, 2011, 9:30 Club - Washington, DC Photo by Abby Fisher Unlike an album, where you can revisit songs at different times and in separate moods, concerts are all about singular moments. Of all the shows I attended in 2011, perhaps none featured more memorable moments than Bon Iver's August 2nd stop at the 9:30 Club, the second of a two-night visit. The full band's explosive and divisive "Beth/Rest," their flawless cover of Bjork's "Who Is It," and the way in which Justin [...]

So here we go, the top 20 albums of 2011 from Sound of The Overground... Accompanying each entry is a track to listen to a video to watch and a brief, Twitter-friendly pocket review... 20: Pains of Being Pure at Heart - Belong Pocket Review: A big debut to follow up but the fuzzed out shimmering melodies of Pains of Being Pure At [...]

I've been catching up on Now, Now while trying to piece together a coherent preview for NBC but it is 2am and I'm also watching the Daily Show. My ears perked up when I discovered some news about a new record called Threads that will be released March 6th. It has been a long while since Cars, y'know, back when they were Now Now Every Children? Those were the days... The Minneapolis band has signed to Chris Walla's Walla Trans label and have just released a new (new!) [...]

Name: Tegan and Sara Progress Report: Sara Quin talks about Get Along , what's next for the band, and the Tyler, The Creator controversy that won't seem to ever go away. Last month Tegan and Sara released Get Along - a career-spanning live album that also includes three short documentary films on the band. Not only is the album a potent reminder of just how much of a polished live act Tegan and Sara have become, it's a nice feather in the cap for a band that has been recording and [...]

Now, Now have just announced the release of their sophomore full-length album Threads , due out March 6th 2012 (via Chris Walla's Trans- Records label). Produced by Howard Redekopp (Tegan and Sara, An Horse, New Pornographers), Threads comes 3 years after their last full-length ( Cars) and will be one to watch for in 2012. Look for the band to tour the US extensively, including stops at SXSW and summer festivals along the way. Take a listen to this first track "Dead Oaks".
