Agosto 2010, Londra.

As we noted over the weekend in The Year's Best Coverfolk, Part 1: Tribute Albums and Cover Collections , it's been a good year for full-album coverage. Overall, though, despite the fact that, in terms of sheer mass, covers from tributes overwhelm singletons in my collection, what I've found this year is that a significant majority of the songs that lingered, and demanded overplay, came from a mixed bag of borderline genre albums and single shot coverfolk tracks, via the usual sources, from YouTube, Soundcloud, studio appearances, website and bandcamp singles, and more. [...]
Christmas, Three Years Ago, I started this blog. Every year of my life has been a blessing on many levels. Not so much on the blog front, but definitely on the personal front. This blog was made to help promote new music and a venting board for myself. It has done both and also been super time consuming. I love it at times and I also want to give it all up five minutes later. But I don't, not yet, tee-hee. This years Christmas Compilation - Culture PopMas 2011, is probably on my favorites from the last three years. As [...]
The Staves are three beautiful sisters making beautiful music. It's music formed out of simplicity – one acoustic guitar and three harmonised voices that are about as close as you can get to pure. The word spell-binding doesn't even do them justice. Jessica, Camilla and Emily Staveley-Taylor originally hail from Watford, UK and after starting their life in music playing open-mic nights and gigs in local cafes and pubs they secured a slot at the Glastonbury Festival back in 2009. Since then [...]

Photo of Ray Davies compliments of the artist Here are this weekend's XPN Welcomes concerts. FRIDAY NOVEMBER 18 Bell X1 is Ireland's best barely-kept secret. The group, originally known as Juniper, used to feature Damien Rice as its lead singer; unfortunately, it's still often recognized for that fact, rather than for its Talking Heads- and Flaming Lips-inspired fusion of rock and electronic music. Bell X1 is a sensation in Ireland, nominated for Best Irish Band at the Meteor Music Awards three different times. It was also nominated [...]

Video: Brian Lopez covers "The Killing Moon"
Brian Lopez may be an unfamiliar name but he hits familiar points that will draw you close - looks like Albert Hammond Jr. (The Strokes), has the same delicate voice as Damien Rice and strums like the great Jeff Buckley. Based in Tuscon, Arizona, Brian presents a desert-noir, psych rock vibe and shakes things up [...]
Start An Ocean
Was cruising around the bottom of the Elbo.ws hotlist and came across the name Benjamin Francis Leftwich whose single Pictures , below, comes out on February 20th. In this market, where everyone's got a Bandcamp page, it's difficult for someone with just a song and guitar to stand out from the crowd. BFL manages to do this, dispensing advice in hushed tones that sound as though he's letting you in on a little secret. RIYL : Sufie Steves and Damien Rice. (It's a Damien Rice kind of day.)

One of the more upbeat songs from Lisa Hanningan's second album Passenger has gotten the video treatment real good. We are glad she is venturing out in the visual world more. Year lists (6)
1. Mélanie Laurent - Mélanie Laurent She called her superb debut album "The fulfillment of a childhood dream". Well, her childhood dream tickled me from the start (Début) until the end (Fin). Together with Damien Rice she made a perfectly balanced mixed of classical chansons with a little hysteria, sweet duets, surprising arrangements and little hidden treasures of intimacy. All drenched in Mélanie's seductive voice. 2. Coeur De Pirate - Blonde Is there anything left to say about FS fav Béatrice Martin? How brilliant her second album is and how fantastic her concert was in Brussels [...]

Little Mix – Cannonball Video
This year's X Factor Winners Little Mix have unveiled their video for Cannonball, after hitting the number one spot in the UK singles chart last week. The original was by Irish singer song-writer and record producer Damien Rice , and originally hit the number 32 in the UK Charts. Following the X Factor release, it has now re-entered the charts and has hit the number 9 spot. That's the power of The X Factor for ya, in a nutshell. Little Mix - Cannonball [...]

State's Albums of 2011: 40-31
Day two of the end of year countdown, as voted for by the great and the good of the State team. This next five bring you two hip-hop giants rubbing shoulders with a UK folk band, a couple of Irish names from opposite ends of the spectrum and a range of North American alternative sounds. Have a good weekend and we'll return with the next installment on Monday. 40. Bombay Bicycle Club - A Different Kind Of Fix "A bit of folk here, a touch of dreamy guitar there, some jaunty [...]
Other Voices 10 – Mick Flannery, James Vincent McMorrow, Cold Specks & Lisa Hannigan
People say Dingle has a micro-climate of its own, with the weather often going off on a different trajectory to the rest of the country. I wonder if that has been a major factor to Dingle having what I can best describe as a micro-atmosphere. It's almost as if you leave your memory about half-way between Tralee and Dingle, so that when you get here you can't quite remember the real world you've left behind. Maybe it's the distance, the long drive from Dublin, but when you arrive in Dingle you have to get on Dingle-time and slow way down. [...]

HOLMES-Covers
2011 is definitely the year of the cover. And Holmes ' project is "another one of those." But it's also one of the more unusual of the lot. Ice Cube's "It Was a Good Day" becomes a sunny single. "You Dropped a Bomb on Me" becomes a 1970s AM single. My favorite Jacksons tune is still funky, but now sounds white and nerdy. "Don't Be Cruel" sounds like electronica Beatles. My second favorite Genesis song is a straightforward pop. (My favorite one is "Man on the Corner," in case you were wondering.) Musically, it's tight and fun, with gues [...]
