In case you haven't been keeping up with Sublime, the band's name has been coming up a lot lately. Unfortunately, it's been in the context of a courtroom as drummer Bud Gaugh and bassist Eric Wilson have battled with Brad Nowell's estate over use of the Sublime name. To quickly bring you up to speed, Wilson, Gaugh, and singer/guitarist Rome Ramirez performed last month as Sublime at the Smokeout Festival in California. They were immediately hit with a threatened lawsuit from Nowell's estate. "Out of respect for Brad's wishes," Nowell's representatives said in a statement, [...]

Dylan said he'd know his song well before he'd start singing. Jai Little Diamond (one Mike Taylor) isn't in a hurry to sing any half-learned tune. When his celebrated alt-country band, The Court and Spark, darkened several years ago Diamond and fellow Sparker, Scott Hirsch, wrote some tunes, gathered together a roadworthy band and played some dates as Hiss Golden Messenger . Fast forward to the summer of 2009; Diamond is resettled in rural North Carolina, Hirsch is in NYC and their first album, Country Hai East Cotton (reapandsow), is signed, sealed and delivered. Boasting a lineup [...]

2009 was a year where the sound of Gareth Emery continued to explode in popularity, thanks to a packed DJ diary and the launch of his new record label and club night Garuda, responsible for numerous chart-topping releases and sold out superclubs. Now he's rounding off the year with his new compilation, a 2xCD mix album, which as the title suggests, is all about the sound of Garuda. CD1, entitled '2010', is all about the future, an exquisite showcase of records you can expect to be big next year. Packed full of exclusive unreleased [...]
Since releasing Twilight of the Innocents back in 2007, the Irish trio known as Ash has turned away from the conventional recording of albums to focus instead on releasing steady singles on their own schedule. This led to the creation of The A-Z series, a collection of 27-songs that will be released every two weeks for the next few months. The songs find Ash trying out new avenues and new sounds, but somehow they don't neglect their own past in doing so. I got a chance to chat with Ash front man [...]
So what's happening this weekend? I think there are still tix available for Bill Maher at the Wilbur on Thursday (and they now have a liquor license so cheers!). Also on Thursday you have a chance to check out the new project the Port Charles Quintet at the Plough which sounds fun or you could go to the Brattle for the Califone show. But if these don't appeal to you, don't worry, there are many other great choices on Thursday. On Friday, the show at the Cantab looks strong with the Brooklyns, but then there's also Dennis [...]

One of the best of the many "ghost" bands that have operated through the years would have to be that of Count Basie. Although he died over twenty years ago, the Count Basie Orchestra - or the CBO, as it calls itself (complete with a nifty logo that pictures all the group's members) - has pretty much been a continuous force in jazz. Under the direction of Bill Hughes in recent years, it has performed with stars like Tony Bennett and has consistently topped jazz polls while winning countless Grammys and other awards. For the CBO's newest album, [...]

Considering how big of a role music plays in everyday life, it's not surprising that characters in dozens of sitcoms and animated television series have attended concerts or formed bands. Most of the time these fictitious artists are seen and not heard, but in a few instances the writers of these shows actually write songs for the fake bands to perform. For this week's B List we detail ten songs from fake bands you may have seen on television. We stuck with songs from series that weren't focused on these fictitious artists, [...]

It was another eclectic month of music listening here in September, with a wider selection and a greater number of discs spun. Starting in August , I decided to keep track of every album I listened to in its entirety. The rules: Only an album heard in its entirety, even if it is spread over several days, will count. Repeat spins, partial listens, EPs, singles and background music don't count. This had to be active listening of a full album. I could listen in the car, at home, at work or even on headphones while mowing the lawn. Every [...]

British Invasion, '60s California pop and more from Smithereens drummer As the drummer for the Smithereens, Dennis Diken's taken both a figurative and literal backseat to the songwriting and singing of Pat DiNizio. But Diken's a drummer with a lot of melody in him, as his first solo album so amply shows. Paired with multi-instrumentalist Pete DiBella, Diken not only keeps time but sings most of the leads and backgrounds and co-wrote all thirteen of these throwback pop tunes. Diken draws from the same mid-60s millieu as DiNizio's Beatle-esque songs for the Smithereens, but [...]

Rock geeks, get ready to drool. If you just can't get enough of rock nostalgia, then Smithereens drummer Dennis Diken has been joined by a group of special guests to make this love letter to the golden age of rock. Oh yeah, those guests include, The Wondermints, Andrew Sandoval, Brian Wilson producer Andy Paley, The Honeys and Jason Falkner . Fellow New Jersey native Pete DiBella collaborated with Dennis to bring these songs to fruition, reflecting their mutual love of classic pop and rock genres. Fans of all the old school greats: The Four Seasons, The Who and The [...]
