In the Book Notes series, authors create and discuss a music playlist that relates in some way to their recently published book. With her book Girl Power: The Nineties Revolution in Music , Marisa Meltzer explores the music of the '90s and how both the underground and popular movements of the times have shaped our world. Combining in-depth research with biting commentary, Riot Grrl with Madonna, Girl Power is an entertaining but also informative social reference, and one of the best music books I have read in years. When The Besnard Lakes first crossed our radar back in 2007, it seemed like the hip thing to do in indie rock was to sound like a drugged out version of The Beach Boys. Bands like Panda Bear did it and when folks got their first listen to The Besnard Lakes, they lumped their sound in with Panda Bear and other groups of the moment who discoved their parents old Beach Boys albums and added a dark veil to the approach. And sure, the harmonies are really a nod to Brian Wilson and the sound [...]
Musician Billy Hinsche has a long storied history, but in 1974 he played front and center in The Beach Boys during the "Holland-era" tour. Billy playing guitar and harmonizing with the Wilson brothers is all documented in this new film. Not so much a concert film, but a selection of never before seen "home movies" of the band onstage and off. Lots of footage of the late Dennis and Carl Wilson are shown, intercut with current interview clips of other players in the band and some archival photos. It also really lets you learn about various background players, like sound [...]

Andrew Weatherall – Fact Magazine Mix (mp3 via Fact Magazine ) Tracklisting: Circlesquare – Hey You Guys [...]

No real surprises to report. Beyoncé earned a bundle of Grammys. Lady Gaga delivered a rousing - and surprisingly uncontroversial - duet with Elton John . Taylor Swift also cleaned up, though her number with Stevie Nicks sounded a tad off (as did Slash's guitar solo during T-Pain's performance). Best prop goes to Best Comedy Album winner Steven Colbert , who pulled an iPad out of his jacket during his monologue. And kudos to Kings of Leon for admitting they were a tad drunk while accepting the Grammy [...]

The Canadians catch a lot of guff for being... well...peaceful people. Apart from hockey fights and their occasional slaughter of a caribou or two, they're pretty easy going and a nice neighbor to the North. Hell, Americans are definitely Dennis the Menace to their Mr. Wilson. But then I came across this article that talked about a Fight Club that had been set up at The University of Manitoba. After an internal investigation, administrators determined that students had been having scheduled fights on the squash courts. Wait...what? Meet me on the squash court? Was the zamboni [...]
![[DECADEnce] The Top 50 Movies of the 00s](http://cache.elbo.ws/posts/2241170_lg.jpg)
DECADEnce continues this week with my list of the Top 50 Movies of the 00s. There were quite a large number of high quality films released in the past decade, and choosing only 50 to fill out this list was actually somewhat tough. The good news is that I'm very happy with this final product, and if you're a movie fan like I am, I hope you'll agree with me. I haven't bothered to count how many films I see each year, let alone across an entire decade, but I can promise you that with my average of 5 movies [...]

Dennis Wilson: Holy Man It's freezing up in here, but this has been the tonic lately. Off of 1977's Pacific Ocean Blue . And this , from the same album, puts me in mind of Jeff Tweedy.

There are 370 passwords that Twitter has deemed either "too dumb" or "too bizarre" for their security protocol. There's always the guy who thinks he's being cute by making his password: "password." I tend to make my passwords modeled after STD medications because they're hard to spell, and people tend not to want to add that into their search history for spell check purposes. 1. 111111 2. 11111111 3. 112233 4. 121212 5. 123123 6. 123456 7. 1234567 8. 12345678 9. 131313 10. 232323 [...]

My sister is spending a lot of time away from home lately. My mom says it's that new job of hers, my dad isn't so sure. I don't care - today I was able to snap up two of her records, both by California music dudes who might have been pretty well-known back in the 1970s but are virtually forgotten today. The first record is Bright Sun Is Shining , by Barry "The Fish" Melton. This one is from 1970, and it was the first solo album by the guitarist from Country [...]

Michael: Earlier this year, with no more than a handful of months in the Bay Area, a group called darwinsbitch asked us to play a show with them at the Totally Intense Fractal Mindgaze Hut in Oakland. The legend and mystery of time, place and person have severely affected the direction I see the music in my head turning. darwinsbitch turned out to be a person, a one Marielle Jakobson, playing a heady violin accompanied by some sort of digital drone device. darwinsbitch - "Iron Lake" [...]

Known for their reverent online community and dedicated circulation of live shows , The Mother Hips are a band I grew up hearing whispers of their greatness. Indeed, the Hips are not new kids on the block of Americana and alt-country. If you're a first time listener as I was until earlier this year, I would recommend them to those that enjoy the early output of bands like Son Volt , Black Crowes , and Widespread Panic's eponymous album. The Mother Hips released a brand new album [...]
