Remember Dent May? Harlem-based songwriter Jesse Thompson has been regularly rolling with them since 2008, and he has released earlier this year another solo EP as Tommy Toussaint, his oh-so-sentimental vintage-pop moniker. Called "Computer Snacks", this incredibly tight and outrageously ignored opus is a collection of unapologetically romantic songs "heavily informed by an extensive use [...]

Dent May releases album number 3, Warm Blanket, less than a year of his last. Apparently Dent May has something on his mind. Or at least that's what I gather from hearing the...
If any of you were wise enough to snag some earlybird tickets to Boomslang when I reminded you to do so, you'll no doubt be jumping for joy when you see this initial lineup. We've got Blonde Redhead, Clinic, Body/Head (featuring Kim Gordon), Youth Lagoon, No Joy, Dent May and a bunch of other great [...]
Today is the last day to pick up Boomslang tickets for the early-bird price of $45! They've already announced a fraction of their lineup, including Dent May, Saul Williams, Marnie Stern and Adult. If you live near Lexington and like a good diversity of music, make plans to be at Boomslang from Sept 20 - [...]

As cultural critic Malcolm Cowley argued in Exile's Return: A Literary Odyssey of the 1920s , dissent comes in two primary hues: the populist and the individualist. Whereas populist revolt aims to channel mass movements in pursuit of peace, liberty, and justice, individualist revolt denounces any investment in society as deluded and foolish. Most artists tread lightly when navigating this dichotomy. They inch across the spectrum between populist and individualist revolt slowly and cautiously, lest they alienate their fans. But in the summer of 1964, Bob Dylan hurled himself headlong from one pole to the other with [...]
Welsh rockers get the party started by the seaside. Every year thousands of music fans from across the globe flock to Brighton for the Great Escape Festival, a three day festival which sees over 600 bands perform in venues all across the city. It comes as somewhat of a blessing then that every year Rock Sound Magazine get in on the mix and sponsor three shows across the weekend, showcasing some of the finest up and coming talent in the rock world. And this year they have well and truly outdone themselves with their line-up. [...]
As the fine folks over at Torstraßen Festival announced a few days ago , we are very happy to take part as curators for our own little NFOP 'showcase' at the festival this year, taking place in different venues and cafés running along the Tostraßen street in Mitte on August 31st . After last year's wonderful line-up (including our out-of-town friends The Townhoses, Wintercoats, Dent May and more), the link to Berlin once again proves to be an important direction for the artists at Torstraßen, as we would perhaps even claim it to be one of [...]
By Kyle Bylin ( @sidewinderfm ), founder and editor of sidewinder.fm , a music and tech think tank. Have you ever heard of Pandora? This is often the question that music and tech executives open a conversation with when they are talking to people that exist outside of their bubble. Everyone, it seems, responds that they use Pandora or nods in acknowledgement that they have heard of the Internet radio service before. Considering that Pandora recently surpassed 200 million [...]
Friday has this grim propensity to be a bit of a dry one: the persistent drip of emails touting largely drab wares in the inbox tends only to be sporadic at best, lunchbreaks more or less double in length, and this week the weather's still unremittingly dour. Though alleviating the gloom is this lustrous composition from Stockholm five-piece Alexandria , for Whatever is positively sodden with an inspiratory brightness: giddying as Dent May's wondrously blithe Do Things and gleeful as Melody's Echo Chamber , it's gawky as it is graceful. [...]

At this point I've heard just about everything these guys have served up thus far, which has seen them progress from 90's alt-rock riff slingers to a gradual evolution of those type of aesthetics mixed with a more punchy power-pop kind of deal. The members, who are all mostly vets of that bygone era of rock, are undoubtedly wiser for having trudged through those times of major label rock feasting...the days when something interesting might actually pop on the radio from time to time. It gives the advantage to Porcupine to not mistakenly run [...]

Mac DeMarco Over the course of SXSW I took thousands of photos of the dozens and dozens of bands that I saw. I doubt you read all of my individual posts. If you did, cool! If not, here are the best photos that I took (in my humble opinion), which I wanted to share with you guys. Earl Sweatshirt The Thermals Parquet Courts Allah-Lahs [...]

Latest feature on Grammy.com, here . South by Southwest is one of the world’s biggest music events, and definitely the largest spectacle to hit Austin, Texas, each year, drawing filmmakers and IT savants from across the globe. In this mass of music fans, industry veterans and the constant search for a charging station, it can be near impossible to find a place to just relax and enjoy the amount of talent surrounding you. On March 15 at the Avenue on Congress I found my refuge, the official SXSW showcase presented by Bond Music Group and Vitalic Noise, [...]
Australian Tour with BORN OF OSIRIS Begins on May 16th New Album ‘Savage Seas’ Coming Summer 2013 Up-and-coming Australian metalcore band FEED HER TO THE SHARKS has been blazing the underground trail for some time— attracting fans across the globe with their pristine technical sound and engaging live performances. Originally discovered in 2012 by Darkest Hour guitarist Mike Schleibaum whilst already having a Fredrik Nordstrom-produced full-length album tacked to their name, this gifted five-piece is ready to take things above and beyond in 2013 with a new tour coming this spring and new album, Savage Seas, set for [...]

22-year-old songstress Megan McInerney aka Meg Mac is an exciting new act from our friends over at The A&R Dept. Currently residing in Melbourne where she's penning her debut EP, her first single comes in the form of 'Known Better' - a track that reveals her heavily Soul and Motown-influenced upbringing, and reflects on a particularly naive instance in her past. The track has given her attention as a spotlight artist on Australian powerhouse radio station Triple J, and featured in the Best of ABC online. What do you think? [...]

There's a veritable aural feast on offer at SXSW and wading through impressive line-ups is a full-time research project. If you're lucky enough to attend this year, then it's probably wise to pack a militarized timetable alongside your shorts and sunglasses or, alternatively, you could take a more laissez-faire approach and stagger hopefully between venues with taco in hand. I was given the near impossible task of whittling down the vast list of parties (unofficial and official) to just ten choice picks. Whichever festival-going tactic you decide to adopt, here's a respectable starting point: [...]

Over the next 10 days, more than a quarter-million of motivated artists and industry personnel will descend upon Austin. New York musicians will speed 26 hours and 1,500 miles to Texas’s capital, while Los Angeles filmmakers will make the three-hour flight into Austin-Bergstrom International Airport. Some start-ups will walk to the festival, while other musicians will travel halfway around the globe. They all come for one purpose: the 27th annual South By Southwest . The 10-day festival, which includes music, film, and interactive segments, unites credential-wearing hordes in a party-hopping, buzz-building extravaganza. Some registrants will partake in [...]

Mobile batteries haven't really been something to get excited about. A couple years ago they were novel but they are becoming as ubiquitous as smart phones themselves. All sorts of sizes & shapes have been floating around ranging from monster-sized bricks to form-fitting sleeves like Mophie's Juice Pack. Yet, I've never quite found a portable charging solution that packed enough power, was portable enough, charged quick enough and was versatile enough to make it a great solution for portable charging needs. Thankfully, Jackery has released three products that [...]

For an artist who started off strong, unleashing a string of platinum-coated surefire hits in the late '002s that brought some considerable weight to all those early hyperbolic claims of her being the "next Janet Jackson", Ciara has struggled a bit in her bid for retaining R&B diva relevancy in recent years. Not that she hasn't tried though. Even when it was looking like she was throwing everything at radio in the hopes that something, anything , would stick, the one-time crunk&b princess was actually producing some good, if a bit repetitive creatively, singles, [...]
