Having my blog has introduced me to tons of bands. Sometimes if I am lucky enough, I have been able to become friends with members of bands. It is like a dream come true to chat it out with real artists!! One band that I have stayed in close contact with is Local Natives . I have been addicted to their beautiful tunes every since I received my first email about them. It's all history since then! I couldn't just be there friend though; it was time to do some professional blogging! Matt Frazier, the drummer of [...]

Sometimes I flirt with the idea of having guest bloggers. For example, our good friend Niels just sent me this: I just found a song that I think is right up your alley. You may have already heard it, but if not, check out "Home" by Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros . If your toes stop tapping while listening, then you either: 1. have no rhythm 2. have no feet Well said Niels. mp3: Edward [...]

DOWNLOAD: Local Natives - Sun Hands (MP3) Fool's Gold / Local Natives "Indeed, in many ways Local Natives ' Gorilla Manor is like a science experiment in how to create a critically acclaimed album: take some of the ethereal folksiness of Fleet Foxes ('Airplanes'), add some Arcade Fire-ish choral harmonies (' Shape Shifter', 'Stranger Things'), a dash of Broken Social Scene's quirkiness ('World News', 'Camera Talk') sprinkle with Cold War Kids-esque off-kilter timings and shouty middle eights ('Sun Hands', [...]

So the pretty lil event site Winter is the New Summer that Devin and I have been working on has officially launched in full! Whoo! Let's have a 750ml salute to that! We did a soft launch in October, then last week we introduced the poster concept and from this week on until the end of winter we will have a different member of the Portland scene acting as a Poster Boy or Poster Girl, holding up our event picks of the week, this week being Rocky formerly of the Hush and currently of [...]

photos by Tim Griffin Tim and I stopped by the Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros show at Music Hall of Williamsburg last time they were in town (8/30). I was especially curious to see what all the fuss was about. The show, much like the two Ed (aka Alex Ebert of Ima Robot) is playing/played in NYC this week, sold out well in advance. I left the show with mixed feelings. It was a while ago, [...]
Contrast Podcast recently asked music bloggers like myself to submit our favorite 50 songs of the year for their annual "Festive 503 podcast. Our selections were then compiled into a shortlist and now we've been asked to recruit votes to narrow it down. For the curious, I've bolded the 10 songs I personally voted for. I really, really want "Nice Very Nice" by Kurt Vonnegut & Dave Soldier (from their album Ice-9 Ballads ) to make the final list. Not only because it's my favorite song of the year, from my favorite album of the year, [...]

Matter of Time mp3 The Leisure Society The Sleeper ..... ..... buy it Well, now this is getting interesting... Over at the Contrast Podcast , Tim's solicited everyone for their favorite 50 songs of 2009, remember? From all the responses he's compiled the top 155. I'm very impressed with the list! If you didn't submit your faves yet, you've still got a chance to get in the game at this point! Help us out, eh? (I"ve highlighted my top 10 in blue) Here's [...]

Recommended Show: WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 18, 2009 JAVELIN & JUICEBOXXX @ MONSTER ISLAND 128 River Street Brooklyn, NY 11211 $7, 8PM When I recommended Juiceboxxx 's show yesterday at Cake Shop, I hadn't realized he was also playing again tonight. However, this one proves to be even better because also on the bill is Javelin, a band we caught early on during CMJ and also at Northside Festival . Both acts are highly recommended. Golem @ Cake Shop Air Waves @ Brooklyn Bowl Evangelicals @ Union Hall Appomattox & [...]
Oooookay, so I've been pushing this band on everyone around the office lately and decided to make you folks more aware. The band is called Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros. They're headed by frontman Alex Ebert (formerly from Ima Robot) and they have this funky gypsy folk sound. They're debut album, Up From Below, dropped this past July and has been getting more and more recognition for its single "Home". I highly recommend you all take a listen. Good vibes comin 'atchya. Here's an unofficial video for "Home" And my personal fav "Janglin"

From top, left to right: Edward Sharpe, HolidayHoliday, The Sun, Moses Campbell, Voice On Tape, Katie The Pest, Robot Koch, BOAT, Mr. Dream What defines this edition of "Hear, Here" is a vaguely roadtrippy California aura. Perhaps each song marks a particular leg on a trip [that I'll never go on because I live in New York]. Many of these bands hail from California, and if not California, the West Coast, and if not the West Coast, fine, Germany. The sounds range from lounge-y tech house [...]

Edward Sharpe & The Magnificent Zeros headlined at the Black Cat tonight. Fools Gold opened up . Both bands are from LA. I don't know if you got the memo - but Los Angeles happens to be the greatest place on earth. Nope. Not Disneyland. Los Angeles, California. Fools Gold rocked it. No question. Edward Sharpe? Transcendent. The cocktail of drugs consumed by the band members before the show must have been a list so impressive it would have made any local pharmacy run away with it's tail behind it's legs. The lady I was [...]

This is a really, really good show. The headliners, Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeroes are probably the band I'd be least excited about, but I've even gotten into the grand, cinematic pop songs recently. Listen to the song below. It's beautiful, catchy, and has been featured on a whole bunch of tv shows recently. Frankly, they write very good, listenable songs. Fool's Gold I've written about tons before: tropical rhythms and world beats a-plenty. Fun for the whole family. And I saw Local Natives at CMJ and was fairly impressed, especially with their amazingly tight vocal harmonies. This is [...]
Local Natives - Cards and Quarters I have the privilege of seeing Local Natives, Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros , Fool's Gold tonight at the Black Cat in DC. Awesomeness will ensue.
