The NB episode production rate is increasing ever so slightly. At this rate we may be back at a podcast a month.... What a summer it's been for music! Fantastic albums are being released... bands are touring... and festivals are on. The Arcade Fire are consuming all of the headlines recently - having picked up the number one spot for record sales recently. Coincidently, their new album Suburbs is a combination of my two passions: music and urban studies. Menomena and The Books have also [...]

Toronto - The lineup for Summerwork's music portion on Thursday night reads like titles from Farley Mowat novels - Wilderness of Manitoba , Mountain and the Trees , Entire Cities and The Weather Station . All four bands seem to draw inspiration from Canada's large and vast space and the gentle and quietness that comes with it. It was basically acoustic-folk power hour at the Upper Ossington Theatre. Knowing that I myself was heading to a cottage on the weekend, I thought these bands would be a nice primer for my foray into nature. [...]

There had been clouds all day, with a hint on the wind that we might get rain, but luckily the inevitable shower only hit late on and was mercifully brief. This was to be a unique event: organised between the Tiger folk club and the Grand Union with the co-operation of the owners Jeff and Kath, as a fundraiser for the ongoing refurbishment of the Shepshed Water Mill . An advance ticket job, barbecue provided, a tour of the restored mill and then music – an informal folk session, mainly unaccompanied, leavened with [...]

Sorry for the lateness on singles chart #13. Due to being busy at Ottawa Bluesfest. There is a Bluesfest theme since half the acts played there. Some oldies and new tracks. Take a look at this week's top 10. This Week Last Week Total Weeks Artist Songs 1 2 6 [...]

The night began at SF General Hospital where I found my camera thanks to the very helpful labor and delivery staff, but that's a long story. I got to the Rickshaw just as Tim Cohen 's latest band was taking the stage. He claims they are trying to come up with a name that doesn't have someone's name in it. Top runner at the moment is Magic Tricks. The small crowd seemed semi-supportive of the proposal. I'm not surprised Tim is having trouble coming up with another band name. [...]

Facebook Summerworks has long been an established name in Toronto's theatrical community, staging successful festivals every Summer (hence the name) for as long as I've lived here, but in the last couple of years, they've been expanding their mandate with a musical series that has aimed to get theatre fans to to discover some of the city's best up-and-coming independent music and vice versa. Each year has gotten better and better, and the just-announced 2010 music series is handily continuing that trend. As previously mentioned , the main [...]
Here is this week's music singles chart. I have been busy with Bluesfest and since its #12, the festival is 12 days of music. So I decided to make Basia Bulat #1 this week after seeing her performance on July 10th . Five new debuts this week. Two fallers and three risers. Check out the chart This Week Last Week Total Weeks Artist Songs [...]
Here is part 2 of my times at NXNE in Toronto. These are the events that happened on Friday June 18, 2010. Its was a full day of excitement. BBQs, live music at a park and various venue hopping. This is one long post. The first stop was going to Bellwoods Trinty Park. Took me about an hour finding out where the spot is considering Bellwoods is a big park. It was a great afternoon listening to bands play their songs acoustic. The best were of [...]

The Color Awesome's newest friends and one of Seattle's hardest working bands is having a CD release show this coming Thursday evening, June 24th. I got the CD from the band and I have to say, I'm impressed that they are still relevant. The opening track of Tearing Down Paisley Garden, "Only Dreaming" is a pop gem you'll be adding to your summer play list; the rest of it is great too. More of a mini album, Tearing Down Paisley Garden clocks in at around 30 minutes. I love shorter works like this; it [...]

From 1957, Roy and Dale in lush and laid-back arrangements of such first-rate hymns as Since Jesus Came Into My Heart , Love Lifted Me , and Sweet Hour of Prayer . Until this evening, I was under the impression that eight of these tracks had appeared earlier in this collection , but on-line discographies tell me the earlier collection is from 1949. I did not know that. Thanks, Internet. (Especially, this Roy Rogers page .) Two of the duets, Love Lifted Me and Charles Gabriel's He Is So Precious [...]

Death Trap Photography If it's mid-June and my lanyard collection has grown by one, it can only mean one thing - NXNE is again upon us. And that means this is yet another weekend I won't get to indulge my fondest fantasy - to sit around and do nothing - and that it's time for another dog's breakfast of a festival preview post. It's a little bit of my own schedule, a bit of what my schedule might be if not for what my schedule actually is, a bit of what's piqued my curiosity [...]
This week's NXNE themed A/V round-up features a new music video from The Balconies; live videos from Ghost Bees, Iggy Pop, Gold Lake, The Mountains and The Trees and Drive Like Maria; and mp3 downloads from Evening Hymns, Krupke, Styrofoam Ones, The Raveonettes, Amos the Transparent, Olenka & the Autumn Lovers, Volcanoless in Canada, Rock Plaza Central and more.

Here is this week's Music Singles Chart #8. The #1 spot hasn't changed this week. Two new debuts, two hold steady, three risers, three fallers. Decided to add a classic Arcade Fire tune as the double a-sided track. Since its World Cup 2010 right now, it is a great time to use this song while the game is happening. Also check out the music video for The Belle Game's Shoulder & Turn. Check out the chart. This Week Last [...]

Armed with stacks of vintage electronic gear, from Boss Flangers and Dr. Rhythm drum machines to Arp Odyssey synthesizers, John Foxx played an all-analogue set at The Roundhouse, London, on June 5th, 2010. Gary Numan and Ade Fenton worked the turn tables and the evening began with a panel discussion featuring author Iain Sinclair, and the leading lights of the Ghost Box label, Jim Jupp and Julian House. The Second Chameleon and I were there on behalf of TSM to report. If you don't know Ghost Box, you should. They're responsible for what has become known as "hauntology," [...]
