I'm not often one for picking up live releases of songs I've already heard on albums, but this sensational EP from Walrus favourites Mumford & Sons and Laura Marling , and their newfound Indian friends The Dharohar Project, has made me rethink my whole approach. Recorded live at this year's iTunes festival, the three artists have created an eight-track release that confirms that each are deserving of the title 'artist' - it's interesting, diverse, unique and experimental, and captures the energy of their live performances wonderfully. Anyone who has had the pleasure of seeing Mumford or Marling [...]

We know some of y'all are Futurebirds fans out there. The band has given fans a free EP , released their debut LP , and then graced us with a live session . In all the hubbub, this little gem was lost in the fray. Futurebirds' Thomas Johnson has a side project called The Interns and they have an album available for free download here . Sample the tracks below if you need a compelling reason to download a free album. The Interns - Demon Inside [...]

Rock critic Dave Marsh raised a few eyebrows back in 1978 when he accused Queen of fascism in a review of their seventh studio album, Jazz . I'm not gonna wade into the waters of Marsh's musical politics or address his opinion of Queen, but I can back Marsh up by saying that I certainly believe a band can tacitly embody a political ideology or a psychological state of mind through their work — and if you'll allow me a brief Marsh-ian conceit, I'm about ready to declare Weezer the world's first truly [...]

[ Dirt Crew Recordings ] ( buy vinyl ) ( buy mp3s ) Irishman Niall Mannion has charted a rapid ascension under his Mano Le Tough moniker, immediately impressing with his lovingly concocted blend of house, disco and techno on labels like District of Corruption, Mirau and Internasjonal. Adding Dirt Crew Recordings to that list with his Baby, Let's Love 12 inch, Mannion furthers his reputation with mixes that cover the deep and techier ends of the house spectrum. Heading over to the Marvin Gaye collection for sample inspiration [...]

When far-away friends visit Seattle, a question that frequently comes up is, "What's your favorite concert venue?" My answer is, "Well, it depends on what you're looking for." If you're looking to relax and enjoy conversations with friends between performances, I highly recommend The Triple Door . It's not the sort of place that feels distinctly Seattle; it's more of a fancy restaurant that happens to have live music. But every once in awhile it's nice to take a break from standing/sweating/pushing and treat yourself to a night of cocktails and pleasant tunes. I have [...]
A collaboration between UK dance-pop trio Friendly Fires and Toronto House masterminds Azari and III doesn't really seem intuitive, but that doesn't stop this collaboration from being pretty good. "Stay Here" appears on Friendly Fires' Bugged Out Mix for Rough Trade, and surprisingly manages to mesh both bands' styles without letting either get lost in the sonic fray. Okay, maybe Friendly Fires' brand of busy synth pop is a little more prominent, but it's their mix after all. [ The Fader ]
While the American market still works on the breakout debut from Irish pop/rock trio The Script -- over 300,000 sold, still averaging 4k per week -- the U.K. market gets the second album Science and Faith September 13 (Sony) from frontman Danny O'Donoghue and band. Melodic hooks, distinctive American nu-soul references and songs that sound like a hybrid of Sting/The Police, The Fray and Maroon 5 make The Script one of the rare acts who can combine smarts and incisive songcraft for a mainstream, radio-friendly appeal -- and without dumbing down the process. Huge worldwide hits [...]
We here at ATH hope that all of you had fun over the past 3 months soaking up the Vitamin D, getting wasted, and subsequently wreaking havoc across our city, but now it's time to get back into the dreaded educational mentality. One of the truly great things about going to school is the first day. You'll be meeting new people and making a good first impression is all it takes sometimes to get an excellent shot at a get-together with that certain someone you're sure to see that day. Well, if music has taught me anything, musicians usually know [...]
by Jay Mattson Canada has been a venerable bastion of good music for the past decade. The New Pornographers, Broken Social Scene, Wolf Parade and Death From Above 1979, just to name a few, have all hailed from our neighbor to the north. Vancouver's Black Mountain joined the fray with a 2005 self-titled debut that [...]

Label: SubPop Release date: 23/08/10 Link: Official Site So far 2010 has been the year of accessibility. As a listener and musician, I cannot deny that music (especially indie music) has been moving in a direction to add more palatable and desirable sounds to the sonic fray. The oft mentioned (especially in my writing) Woods made their last LP an accessible one, bands like Real Estate and Beach Fossils make easy to listen to pop at their cores, and even noise paragons like Merzbow have [...]
Click to View In the spirit of the independent music I write about I was compelled to feature this Kickstarter project, because it reeks of DIY gone right. Determination, convict ion and a little humor goes a long way and independent filmmaker Alexia Anatosio has all that and more. [...]

We recently caught up with Gabrielle Aplin for a quick interview. This young folky pop starlet from Bath is releasing a 5 track acoustic EP in September, as well as heading out on her debut headline UK tour. Q1. Describe your music in three words? "Calm, youthful and versatile." Q2. Who are your musical and non-musical influences? [...]

1 count guilty, y'all got to feel me... Prosecutors vow a retrial, but for now Blago is only facing five years as he was only found guilty on one of the 24 counts against him (lying to the FBI). People have mixed feelings on this verdict...but what are your thoughts? via Chi Tribune After deliberating for two weeks, a federal jury today convicted Rod Blagojevich of only one of the 24 counts against him - lying to the FBI - and announced it was deadlocked on [...]

"Hey! We're going to Norway tomorrow – and you're all invited!" Not many bands can say this and you can genuinely believe them. But such was the case with LA's Fool's Gold . They're a globe trotting band in every sense of the word: hailing from California, influenced by West African guitar music and singing in Hebrew, they embrace every continent they visit with love - and take it with them. They were an apt band to celebrate White Heat's 7th birthday. Support from Tinashé and A.J Holmes and Hackney Empire supplied similar positive afro-centric rhythms [...]

The last time Black Forest's primary punk activist brigade Manic Street Preachers stuffed 'Solitude' into a song title, the outcome was a rather melancholic, polished pomp romp off of the overtly melodramatic Lifeblood of 2004. This time round, I'm Leaving You For Solitude, one of a myriad of B-sides to forthcoming single (It's Not War) Just the End of Love (13th September) recalls the uplifting acoustic stomp of Let Robeson Sing off the endearingly incoherent Know Your Enemy. This autumn sees the vociferous trio wade back into the fray with a snarling vengeance, as they ready their 10th [...]

We've been following Brendan James for a while now and returning to his buoyant and promising 2008 debut The Day Is Brave for a regular spin. But despite the finely crafted, melodic piano pop from the New York-based singer/songwriter on display with Day , nothing really prepared us for the staggering growth that is written in capitol letters all over James' fine new self-titled sophomore album (September 7, Decca). Finding that special not-too-sweet spot that lingers somewhere between hook-heavy, radio-friendly pop anthems and the art of critically credible, personal songwriting, Brendan James exudes [...]
