See below for a full list of dates. April 11 - Café Continental, Gourock* 12 - Twa Tams, Perth* 13 - The Loft, Forres* 14 - The Arch [...]

A few weeks ago I posted a selection of my favourite songs of 2011 . A selection of 15 or so powered by the beauty of You Tube. Since then I have read some excellent lists that went a whole lot further. Up to 100 in fact. Like here , here , here , here and here . So I decided to create a list for myself. No real reason other then that I like to create lists. I see some list makers will limit each artist to only one song. Some go [...]

I don't think it's much of a secret that I really enjoy my annual trips up to Inverness for Scotland's largest music industry event, goNorth . Not only has it given me the opportunity to meet a lot of people and make contacts that I wouldn't normally have had the chance meet, but it's also been one of the most fun things I have been involved with since I started this blog. I am pretty sure that my liver is only just starting to get over the battering that it took after last years debauchery. Having originally been invited [...]

After the profanity-filled rant of my last post (I do apologise to those of a gentler disposition than myself), I'm afraid it's necessary for me to profane againm with my second-ever post on the wonderful Startled Bunny, from Scotland. Sorry, Frightened Rabbit. I posted about Frightened Rabbit three years ago (three years? Jebus...), and on this special night in Scotland (Robbie Burns Night, for those of you who didn't know - and if you didn't, for shame! For shame! (No, I didn't know until told today either...)), I [...]

Five years ago today, Australia Day, I met my beautiful wife. To cut a long story short we had met through my blog. She commented on Modest Mouse and Mountain Goats gigs that we had both been to. Soon we were Last Fming and emailing. Then I had tickets to a great gig. Joanna Newsom, Andrew Bird and Bill Callahan on January 26, 2007. We met. We connected. We became gig buddies. We became friends. We became boy and girl friends. We bought a house together. We got married. So it's now been 5 and a half years [...]

Give me the soft, soft static, with a human voice underneath It might seem sacrilegious for a Frightened Rabbit fan like myself to declare a cover of one of their songs better than the original but that's what I'm going to do here. John Statz has stripped the song down to its essence and melded it along with the songs around into an album that captures a nostalgia that the title implies. His cover of Old Old Fashioned appears on his new album, Old Fashioned , which is out [...]

Man, as a blogger who works from home is there such thing as 'taking a day off sick'? I don't think there is, but if there's one thing I miss from the days of having a grown up job it's being able to take a day off sick knowing that someone else would have to take care of the shit you were supposed to do, and it wouldn't all just pile up and sit in wait for you until you got back. So here I sit, secretly wanting to curl up in bed, but knowing full well that, [...]
Two and a half years after my last regular song obsession post I've decided to relaunch the series , this time as an every-two-weeks affair. I just found it was a great way to ask my friends and fellow music fans what they're really obsessing about at the moment. Song obsessions are those songs that get stuck in your head. This series of posts isn't about what I or the other panel members think is best, but what our brain latches onto, those ear worms that loop around and around in your head. [...]
Denver folksinger turns Frightened Rabbits' 'Old Old Fashioned' into a lullaby.

A quick update on our upcoming release over on Yer Bird Records from John Statz: its now streaming in full on our bandcamp page ! The album is due for release in two weeks (January 24th) and will have a limited CD release alongside the super futuristic digital versions that all the kids are talking about. The album is 10 tracks and includes some of the most honest rural Americana you will find (I am biased though...apparently). If you don't believe me, just take a listen to tracks like the banjo [...]

The Tree Ring @ San Diego Women's Club by Natalie Kardos . The Tree Ring top my list of top song obsessions for 2011. Frontman Joel P West also appears on the list. Song obsessions are those songs that your brain picks for you, those ear worms that get stuck in your head and have you singing them to yourself or going back to hit repeat on your ipod. I like the idea of reporting what my brain got stuck on each year. Here's the list of the songs that were stuck in [...]

The January release holds a special place in the ebb and flow of artistry; though it runs the real risk of being forgotten by the time it comes to make our year's end lists, it also finds the market just gearing up again after a spate of holiday absence and Christmas releases. Thanks to tip-offs and promos from the usual sources, our fresh eyes have spotted three albums - each one due to drop this month, all well worth watching for - plus a few bonuses on the event horizon. As always, read and click for [...]

Last week we caught up with The Twilight Sad for an extensive chat about their forthcoming LP, No One Can Ever Know . It was the first in a series of interviews that will look at some of the records we're most looking forward to over the first few months of 2012. Next up in our interview series are the Sad 's new label-mates Breton . The band have recently signed to FatCat Records ahead of the [...]

Words by Matthew Healy Adam Stafford is a busy man. Aside from his musical output - which has, in the past six years alone, consisted of four albums with Y'all Is Fantasy Island, four solo albums and several collaborative works – he is an award winning film-maker and runs the digital release platform Wiseblood Industries. Mid-way through 2011 he released Build A Harbour Immediately , a record that we ranked as the 13th best of the year. Adam was able to take some time out of [...]

You may have missed our ' official ' albums-of-the-year list over the Christmas period, if you did so then head here now to check them out. Unfortunately I'm far too unorganised to sort out any kind of voting system, so I took sole responsibility for both the albums and singles list. However I felt that it would only be right to include some end-of-year coverage from all our wonderful writers so I asked them to compile their own personal Top 5 albums of the year. Here are the results... Tomas [...]
