HAPPY NEW YEARS!! We are not going to tease you slowly giving you 10 songs a week until we reach 101. It may be overwhelming but we believe in not holding back and giving you everything at once! The only thing we ask in return is that you share this list with all your friends (on Facebook and twitter ) and bookmark it (Ctrl + D or Delicious ) for later viewing! In short, this list represents The Music Ninja in its entirety. It contains most of our favorite songs that we blogged in [...]

The fine Indonesian bubblegum-flavoured indiepop band Annemarie have announced that they are in the process of recording their second album, and this is great news! I loved their debut "ABC on TV" , and the new album is something I am definitely looking forward to. According to an email I have received from the band, they are still true to their roots, and will still be offering catchy and enjoyable songs. The album will however sound a bit different than the first one, and the band have done several changes in the musical [...]

When one of my buddies recently complained what a sorry year 2009 was for film, I pitied him, because for music, the year was a truly great one. Especially compared to the onset of this decade, when bubblegum pop ruled the charts, Napster was hitting its stride and Destiny's Child was still together. The lonely thump of late-90s techno that was formerly a major influence on popular music gave way to a movement of open-minded, more cerebral musical ideas. [...]

Music, Writing & LOST With Paul Levinson Ahoy! Some well-respected, devilishly handsome blogger who uses the handle Swan Fungus posted an amazing interview with Paul Levinson today on WFMU's Beware of The Blog. Rather than critique his performance (which would be impossible, as he is surely flawless in all aspects of his life), I will simply quote the entire article for you. When I was back east for the WFMU Record Fair earlier this month, I had the extreme pleasure of sitting down for a friendly chat [...]
I was lost in the Imperial Sand Dunes last week when lo-and-behold I stumbled across an amazing find... When I was back east for the WFMU Record Fair earlier this month, I had the extreme pleasure of sitting down for a friendly chat with Professor Paul Levinson of Fordham University. Of course, this was no academic discussion, we were there to discuss Paul's music career as well as his accomplishments as a science fiction novelist. We convened at City Diner on a comfortable autumn afternoon. After a brief introduction, our waiter arrived to take our orders. [...]

This is an ever changing and (hopefully) expanding list of some of the songs I have mentioned before in this blog or simply stuff I have found somewhere on the web that I find interesting, but have no time to write about. All files have been found somewhere in cyberspace (and NONE of them have uploaded by me, so I cannot help you with any requests you might have - just keep returning and something new might pop up), so they will be available until the artists, record labels, fans, whatever decide to remove them. Thanks to a few readers, [...]

Happy end of August, Waveriders! The kids are getting their fresh new haircuts and being prepped for the return to school, the summer nights are a little more chilled, big men in pads and leotards are chasing around other men holding an oblong object of sorts, all of these events just leading to autumn. Sigh . . . that means hockey season is right around the corner. You can't see my smile right now, but ever see a picture of the Cheshire Cat? Yeah. I think you're getting the picture. Anyway, I digress once again. This has been a super [...]

photos by Toby Tenenbaum , words by Black Bubblegum " Great fucking show. And! Hotboxed my first port-a-potty. Fun!" - Anonymous | July 1, 2009 1:17 AM The rain let up, the band came out, and a wonderful evening of music in Central Park ensued. Explosions in the Sky , the Austin based quartet, brought its rolling, meandering, lyric-free virtuousity to the heart of NYC and held a [...]

Power Pop is a term you hear fairly often when talking about oldies that sort of split the atom between Bubblegum (think The Ohio Express or The 1910 Fruitgum Company), Pop (think Three Dog Night, The Grassroots or The Lovin ' Spoonful) and Rock (think The Doors or Cream). I was reading that Pete Townshend of The Who is generally credited with coining the phrase in 1967 when asked what type of music his band played. Referring to "I Can't Explain, Happy Jack and Pictures of Lily he replied "Power Pop." I never knew this [...]

It took Oregon what ... two decades to finally ban smoking in bars? But the Beaver State is all about being ahead of the curve in making sure kids don't mistake smokeless tobacco for bubblegum (I don't recall bubblegum making me projectile vomit). It all went down April 22, when the Oregon House of Representatives voted to slap a $2.14 tax on all cans of smokeless tobacco weighing at least 1.2 ounces. The bill also bans smokeless tobacco companies from targeting youth through event sponsorships and billboards and cartoons. Of course, it doesn't seem [...]

I became a Soft Pack fan (FKA - 'The Muslims') when I heard their single "Parasites". The song reminds me of some underground alternative rock I used to listen to when I was a kid. Their normal sound has a great indie punk rock vibe, however there were a couple acoustic versions of their songs I caught up with a few months back that showed me a different side of their music. These versions of "Red Headed Girl" and "Call it a Day" (off of their EP they titled 'The Muslims') are [...]

From the opening sweep of strings on "United We Stand" — the cut leading off Elton John's Spirit In The Sky - Rare Sessions 1969-70 — there's little doubt we're back in the 1960s. It's sunshine personified, standing in stark contrast to the brooding paranoia that would flow through soon-to-be classics such as Madman Across The Water just a couple years later. That would have to wait. Here, we have a portrait of the artist as a young man, paying homage to popular tunes of the day through a set of 10 cover songs. What shines [...]

words & photos by Black Bubblegum There is barely enough time to do anything in Austin during SXSW... hence all the food carts and restaurants with open window counters for eating on the go. That said, I think it's a true testament to how much I liked Providence's Howl that with all of the other great bands playing at the exact same time, I wanted a second helping. After missing them at the [...]

Neil Young's much-delayed Archives, Volume 1 box set will finally be released via Warner Bros. on June 1st. The lavish 10-disc set, available in Blu-Ray (retailing for $299), DVD ($199), and CD ($99) versions, features every studio album Young recorded with Buffalo Springfield, Crosby, Stills, Nash, & Young, and solo, as well as rarities and live tracks, from his earliest work in 1963 through his peak commercial years, 1972's Harvest era. It looks to be, quite literally, every note Young committed to tape during these years. A preorder page has been set up, featuring [...]
