Film soundtracks are a notoriously hard sell outside of their film context. 2011 saw a minor trend in affixing popular music artists to celluloid, resulting in the misplaced fervor and expectation that surrounded Daft Punk's score for Tron: Legacy as the French house duo's fourth official album. It wasn't, which shouldn't have been a surprise to anyone, but the soundtrack in question is a perfect portrait of where film scores and fully-formed records can often go their separate ways. Devoid of its film's hard glossy blacks and primary colored neon, Daft Punk's bombastic orchestra-laden synth-heavy score seemed to [...]

Once again The String Cheese Incident will host and headline the Electric Forest festival, which returns to Rothbury, Michigan on June 28 - July 1. Joining SCI a top the bill will be Bassnectar, STS9, Thievery Corportation and Girl Talk. STS9 will play two shows, while String Cheese will play a total of three. Electric Forest organizers have put together an electronica-heavy lineup, but there are a few rock/funk/bluegrass acts on the bill as well, namely The Travelin' McCourys featuring Keller Williams, Ivan Neville's Dumpstaphunk and Gary Clark Jr. There's [...]
Italians Do It Better co-honcho Johnny Jewel hit a pop cultural sweet spot last year, making in-roads with the Gossling demo by landing one of his Chromatics tracks on the much-loved Drive OST. His stardusted and narcotic Italo production style seemed to influence a lot of that soundtrack; in fact, the lesser known and more recent Jewel vehicle, Desire, had a song on in it as well ("Under Your Spell"). Desire is Jewell with fellow Chromatic Nat Walker and vocalist Megan Louise, and here they are with the video for the glam electro-strut cut "Don't Call." It's [...]
![[Review/Listen] – Symmetry – "Themes For An Imaginary Film"](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/4003292_lg.jpg)
Tweet Symmetr y is the pseudonym of Johnny Jewel (as if "Johnny Jewel" wasn't good enough), who is the brains behind Glass Candy , Chromatics , and is responsible for the whole of the Italians Do It Better vision. In 2007 Jewel became something of an icon to me. 2007 saw the release of "B/E/A/T/B/O/X/" by Glass Candy and "Night Drive" by Chromatics , two impeccable disco albums [...]

I don't mean to be a prude when I do this, but we all had favourite albums last year, you can't deny that, and I had too many. In fact, so many that I loved that it was difficult to decide between them all, and I had been reading endless 'trendy choice' end-of-year lists before the year had even gone out. So I thought I might deliver some kind of personal justice by posting one that people can sneer at all they want, but might actually pick out something they overlooked and think "Hey, I might actually try that now, [...]

Amazing collection of tracks and perfect companion to these dark winter months from Johnny Jewel and Nat Walker and their "Symmetry - Themes For An Imaginary Film" project. "Three years in the making, Symmetry - the project that began as a conceptual tangent between Glass Candy, Chromatics, Mirage, & Desire's more abstract sides - finally sees its release this month. Themes For An Imaginary Film is two hours of claustrophobic cinematic bliss compiled for Painters, Writers, Photographers, Designers, Cruisers, Night Walkers, & Dreamers. Adrenaline drips thick like syrup across a horizon where memories become blurred scenes [...]

Arts & Crafts , the Canadian label best known for signing indie darlings like Broken Social Scene, Stars, and Feist, has begun a new era with their newest signing of darkwave synth-pop group Trust . The duo hails from our hometown of Toronto which is about all they have in common with their label mates. Their sound is reminiscent of Crystal Castles (another Toronto group) but with male vocals. In the last year they've performed with DFA1979, Crystal Castles, Balam Acab, Glass Candy, and Hercules and Love Affair. Don't expect to see this on an [...]

Disco is not dead, as Blake Robin, aka Baron von Luxxury , reminds us his shimmering and witty synth-pop. As the newest addition to the Manimal Vinyl family, (a label that is home to bands with a darker edge — Warpaint, Sister Crayon, Bat For Lashes), Robin's persona as Baron von Luxxury blissfully bumps into different territory. A songwriter-for-hire by day who has written hits for artists like Little Boots, but a colorful musician by night who first garnered attention for his kaleidoscopic remixes for Glass Candy, HEALTH and Marianne Faithful, Robin is only a month and [...]

Artwork: Yannis Dragasakis La.Ga.Sta. offered its services to many weary travellers once more this year. By "following rivers" they drove "through the green" and found themselves in "English Riviera" only to come back again to our station for another refill. Taking a Friday drive down this year's memory lane, we think back on our numerous stops including among others: Our after-hours, absolutely wicked dj set in the VIP room of Melt! Festival. We might have missed Cut Copy's performance but we certainly had a blast. Shout out to T.E.E.D., Azari & III, [...]

something special by Johhny Jewel & Nat Walker as they say: - Three years in the making, Symmetry - the project that began as a conceptual tangent between Glass Candy, Chromatics, Mirage, & Desire's more abstract sides - finally sees its release this month. 15. Azealia Banks - 212 Anyone who thought that female fronted electro-rap had run it's course was forced to eat their metaphorical hat this year when Azealia Banks ' '2122 swiftly went viral. Like a showreel, the record demonstrated a multitude of talents - from tough as nails and filthy as hell Harlem rap, to an impressive R&B croon to a pretty aggressive battlecry. And all of this whilst delivering one of the biggest party bangers in recent memory. We're hyped to see what Azealia's Paul Epworth -produced album will sound like and with [...]

The last time I witnessed the Henry Clay People play a New Year's Eve show : The Satellite was known as Spaceland; the Henry Clays covered "Sometime Around Midnight" at, well, about midnight; there was an onstage marriage proposal; the band played 90-plus minutes of classic rock covers in addition to an hour of their own material; and part of the delirious crowd ended up onstage singing along. They're doing it again this year. The lineup for Saturday night's Buzz Bands LA-presented festivities includes cracklin'-good indie-rockers LA Font and Races (the [...]
