Nada Surf are back with a new album this week, The Stars Are Indifferent to Astronomy . It continues their signature brand of cranial wordplay set against easy going, occasionally lush rock orchestrations. The album takes its cue from the opener, spinning inventive cadences and wistful sing-songy choruses over melancholic chords that the group grates over layers of clean production. This is the perfect setting for Caws' lyrics, which are confessional and removed all at once, full of themes of memory, observation and uncertainty, and yes, space. Far from being weighed down, though, the songs remain wistful and pensive [...]

Photo by Lauren Gosninski from VIA Words by Brendan What a way to start off a year of concertgoing. I've never seen a show end due to a band injury before, but that's exactly what happened here. Kim Phuc - Copsucker LP by Kim Phuc I really dig Raw Blow . There's something awesomely appealing about their sound mixture: 60s pop samples, great drumming, hip-hoppy vocal stylings, rumbling bass. I've [...]
It's always a challenge finding the right present for someone who seemingly has everything . It's almost so frustrating that you feel like deliberately getting them something rubbish, just to spite them for the numerous hours you have spent scanning the shelves of your local department store for their gift. The solution to that problem is Big Scary . Melbourne duo Tom Iansek and Jo Syme have recently released their debut album 'Vacation', a collection of expertly crafted songs capable of pleasing even the most querulous [...]

With probably the longest entry of 2011 we give the floor to regular MM contributor and top ten compiler...Dr Roddy. Well it seems to be that time of year again. I always spend 340 days looking forward to doing this and 25 agonising over it. This year especially though, as I think there has been a bumper harvest of great songs. When I looked at my Top Ten playlist (with over 100 songs in it) I just thought one thing: bugger! I got there in the end though. There have been certain parties that have tried [...]

Photo By Keitha Haycock. I've been sitting on this mix tape for quite some time now, it's had a fair amount of changes and tracks added. It's the fourth addition to the "For We Are Young & Free" series, to be honest I really enjoy scouring through tracks to see what works together. I hope you enjoy this edition. Featuring are Australian artists such as: Leagues, The Rubens, The Sunny Days, Bearhug, Pageants, Oliver Tank, The Grates/Whyte Fang, Seekae, Bell Weather Department, Faith Lee, Lynton & Mushu . Don't forget, [...]
The Grates do some pretty accessible indie pop music. I use to love 19 20 20 a few years back. The new stuff is good...but it doesn't make me want to go out and grab it. Then came Sydney lass Whyte Fang. She's gone and messed with 5 tracks from The Grates. And yikes. It's [...]

Welcome to Condale The brief air of mystique that Summer Camp encouraged with their extensive use of retro artwork and movies of young Americans at rest or play ended when they were unveiled as West London's keyboard folkster Jeremy Warmsley and vocalist chum Elizabeth Sankey. This belated debut album's realisation is courtesy of the very modern d-i-y approach of using an online resource (Pledge Music) to get fans to fund the release via [...]

Are you guys ready for this week? We here at The Wild Honey Pie are mentally and physically preparing to deal with sore feet (gel insoles acquired), relentless hangovers (we're stocked up on coconut water and Advil), and the nonstop feeling that you're missing something completely incredible happening just next door (there really is no fix for that one). As daunting as the CMJ Music Marathon is, it's pretty awesome that over the course of the week you can have your pick of innumerable parties showcasing the music industry's most promising bands. What makes it even better [...]

Sallie Ford's first full length release heralds yet another album of ups and downs, good and bad, for Bowlegs. Unusually the first two tracks are the low point in this release. Sallie Ford rages against the modern music industry, screaming: "What have these people done to music?" on first track I Swear in a defiantly 'un-ordinary' vocal tone. This is the problem with writing songs complaining about mainstream music – we can't help but wince slightly at that angle. It's an age old indie argument and if you're going to be writing about the lack of good music [...]

A single guitar hook usually sells me, but in the case of The Shiny Brights – I'm sold by much more than that. Let me tell you, there's nothing lethargic about the music they play; it's raw, it's in your face and it's travelling at serious velocity. If you don't believe me ask the guys, they describe their show was 'a bull in a china shop'. Having supported artists like The Wombats, The Vines, The Living End, The Grates and many more, The Shiny Brights are no stranger to the big stage. They rehearse in a [...]
