Producer, singer, songwriter Greg Laswell has pulled together some amazing talent as collaborators on his new album Landline . Featuring guests Ingrid Michaelson, Sia, Elizabeth Ziman (of Elizabeth and the Catapult) and Sara Bareilles, the new album's inclusion of female singers was brought on by Laswell's constant rotation of hip hop records he was listening to while writing and recording the album. Landline was recorded entirely in a church-turned-house owned by Laswell's in-laws and inspired the album's name for its lack of cellular coverage. Besides inspiring the album's title, the recording environment also led [...]
I've always loved Ingrid... just a fact. And after she married Greg Laswell the two of them have nearly bumped Gweneth & Chris off of my favorite celeb couple list. I suppose it would be classified as "chick music" but I happen to be a girl (if any of you hadn't caught on to that [...]

If you've read any of my previous posts, you'll know i'm a huge fan of John Digweed. I listen to his podcats and live mixes regularly. I'm assuming John has ultimate veto power when it comes to the guests he chooses for TRANSITIONS SHOW - like his mixes - are stellar. Last May, he had NY native ROYAL SAPIEN (aka BEN MAUTNER) on the show. Ben had worked tirelessly to create an EPIC ableton mix called STACKED. His appearance on the TRANSITIONS show, was the debut of the mix. According to Ben, [...]

As we noted over the weekend in The Year's Best Coverfolk, Part 1: Tribute Albums and Cover Collections , it's been a good year for full-album coverage. Overall, though, despite the fact that, in terms of sheer mass, covers from tributes overwhelm singletons in my collection, what I've found this year is that a significant majority of the songs that lingered, and demanded overplay, came from a mixed bag of borderline genre albums and single shot coverfolk tracks, via the usual sources, from YouTube, Soundcloud, studio appearances, website and bandcamp singles, and more. [...]

Downtown jazz band plays funky soul Steve Bernstein's Millennial Territory Orchestra is a New York nonet, featuring a five-piece horn section of brass and reeds, a foundation of guitar, bass, and drums, and drop-ins of violin and banjo. They've made a practice of not practicing, learning tunes and working out arrangements on stage and in the studio, giving their records the vitality of live performance seasoned by the simmered qualities of a road ensemble. Their repertoire mixes jazz-age standards with reworked contemporary pop songs, mating '20s and '30s classics with the works of the [...]

Flashback, 1987: I'm a freshman in high school, just finding my way into the dark underbelly of underground music thanks to the burgeoning alternative college radio scene in and around the Boston area and a younger brother whose musical tastes blossomed early. I hadn't really noticed UK band The Smiths during middle school, but when Girlfriend in a Coma hit the airwaves, it touched me deeply, and I purchased the album from which it came, hardly aware that it would be their last, that the band was already disintegrating from the stress between an exhausted and [...]

Don't you just loathe when drunks abuse the karaoke machine on weeknights? Depending on the neighborhood, you just might hear four to five variations on Morrissey. That's enough to drive you to Advil. That's why we leave it to the professionals to bring justice to a Smiths cover - and, by golly, there are plenty. On December 13th, fans of the English legends can dive into Please, Please, Please: A Tribute to the Smiths , a 20-track compilation sporting Smiths covers from some of indie music's finest, all placing shame on Joe Jukebox, who butchers "How Soon [...]
The best record store ever Plan 9 Music, which was usually my sometimes second home, has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. The store has been a staple in Carytown since 1981 and always had the best new releases, a great atmosphere and incredible in-store concert. I saw Pete Yorn, De Novo Dahl, Greg Laswell, Alex Band and Against Me! all up close. Plan 9 plans to restructure its finances and continue operating, so we'll see what the future holds for this store. In the meantime, head over to Plan 9 [...]

Recommended Show: WEDNESDAY, JUNE 29, 2011 MATT AND KIM & THE THERMALS @ TERMINAL 5 610 W 56th St New York, NY 10019 $28, 8PM I remember when Matt and Kim used to stand by playing affordable shows. At $28, this one is little pricier than I would expect, but they are also bringing The Thermals along for the ride at the large Terminal 5. With a bill like that, you know the hipsters will be there en masse. [...]

It's been awhile since we've heard anything new from the beautiful songstress from NY, Jenny Owen Youngs. Today we got word from one of FGTW favs, Greg Laswell, that we worked on a song from Jenny and they have posted it up on her bandcamp. Check out "Great Big Plans' it won't disappoint. The song is called "Great Big Plans." Production duties were handled by the talented Greg Laswell. He also handled all the microphones and many, many instruments, including his beautiful voice. - Jenny [...]

Jenny Owen Youngs and I shared some one-on-one time a couple years ago out front of The Vollrath Tavern. I walked out and Jenny and friends were firing a pigskin around like Peyton Manning and Co. I jumped in and was immediately impressed with her velocity and tight spiral. Jenny doesn't mess around. Later on that evening, she impressed me even moreso with her vocal stylings and musicianship. JOY is releasing a new digital single today called " Great Big Plans " via her Bandcamp /Internetz today. The new song [...]

. . . Melvin Gibbs has a badass résumé. A bassist who has performed with both hardcore icon Henry Rollins and avant-jazz guitar dynamo Sonny Sharrock is someone to pay attention to. Together with longtime friend Vernon Reid (Living Colour's guitarist), Gibbs came up in drummer Ronald Shannon Jackson's Decoding Society, the wildest fusion band of the '80s. Later, he anchored the Rollins Band during the art-metal juggernaut's 120 Minutes heyday (Woodstock '94!). He's also worked with Funkadelic's Bernie Worrell, DNA's Arto Lindsay, roots-jazz master Bill Frisell, electric–Miles Davis collaborator Pete Cosey, the atmospheric power trio [...]
