Samson Trinh Has A Lot to Teach in Shop Class

Samson Trinh Has A Lot to Teach in Shop Class Last night, the people behind the i.e. creative movement held one of their series of shop classes focusing on creativity in Richmond. This class featured musician and composer Samson Trinh , who you may remember as the brains behind the Abbey Road Project featuring the Upper East Side Big Band. Trinh discussed his musical influences, which included Harry Connick, Jr. and Lee Wiley, and how he went about arranging and composing music. After that, the shop class turned into elementary school music class when Trinh handed out maracas, tamborines and drumsticks [...]

Ellis Marsalis + Devin Phillips - Aladdin Theater (Portland, OR; Apr. 16, 2011)

Ellis Marsalis + Devin Phillips - Aladdin Theater (Portland, OR; Apr. 16, 2011) Saturday night found me in the grittier end of southeast Portland, where Ellis Marsalis , one of modern jazz music's most notable performers, was taking the stage at the venerable Aladdin Theater . Ellis Marsalis, who came of age in a period when jazz was undergoing rapid evolution, and whose [...]
