The summer of 2003 was a hot one in eastern Washington, and my concrete bunker of an apartment contained the heat like no other. Granted, the above image wasn't shot by yours truly until 2004, but it sure seemed hot enough to ignite even the least combustible of items. I wrapped up my undergraduate that December, which was cold as Antarctica, and upon that milestone I moved to Seattle. It was a good year for the Northwest; many of my favorite albums came from Seattle labels like Sub Pop and Barsuk. As for the list, I've [...]

Photography by Kira Can someone explain to me why a label would release a single & a video for a hot & hyped up band like Vampire Weekend, only to hire the Web Sheriff to make sure nobody can share, hear, or watch the song or video, unless going through, I imagine, some "approved source", wherever the hell that is.... I thought Vampire Weekend & their label are trying to ride last year's hype with some 09 hype to carry and convert into [...]

It's going to be my album of the year, at least based on its placing in my top 5 of all albums released this decade, but I still didn't know for certain every lyric to every song on the album, which was mildly annoying. Sunset Rubdown hadn't included a lyric sheet with the album's release and although I'd waded through the threads on the Wolf Parade forums and on songmeanings.net at various times this year, there were enough discrepancies to throw me off on more than one lyric in more than one [...]

Hey yall. As yall know, I spend most of my time on the internet, but sometimes I like to escape 2 a different reality by playing some video games. Decided to 'smoke a bowl of marijuana cigarettes' and unwind by playing this new chill game. Had to go on a 'mission.' Damn. This game seems 'mad violent.' Like stuff that they use to train terrorists/miscellaneous evil people in the world who do things like 'shoot up high schools/colleges/work places.' I wonder if it is good to have progressive games like this. [...]

Here is a guest mix from SF's own DJ Hotthobo aka Randy Ellis. I had the pleasure of playing a gig with Ellis last month and I must say he is quite passionate about the Boogie and Disco sounds we so enjoy here at Beat Electric. This is a solid mix from start to finish and I recommend you check out Hotthobo's monthly Grow Up party in the Tenderloin. And for a plethora of new disco oriented mixes, check out this excellent post on the Disco Delivery page . The Tracklist: [...]

Vancouver, BC's Hot Hot Heat have posted two new songs for download. The band's upcoming record, Future Breeds , is due out sometime in 2010 and will be the band's first since 2007's Happiness Ltd. . Check out "Future Breeds" and "JFK's LSD" at this page .

The Morgue Party Candidate I'm still in two mind as to whether this is one of the best or worst names for a band that I have heard in ages, but the one thing is for sure their EP 'Good Morning, Good Night' is pretty damn good, and it's available for free here . If you like what you hear and you are going to the Define Pop [...]

The guys in Hot Hot Heat have been relatively quiet since their 2007 release Happiness Ltd. While I may be in the minority, I actually enjoyed several songs on that release and I'm excited to hear that the guys are back with new material for 2010. So here's a taste of that new material below with a song called "Future Breeds" which sees the band shedding a bit of their poppy/dancey sound we used to love. Maybe the guys will mature a bit and find a new and more grown up sound. Head over [...]

New music usually comes in waves. This week has been one of those rogue waves that you hear about on the Discovery Channel. I would say that a lot of good music slipped through the cracks, but it didn't - it all ended up on my desktop. So here you go. Hot Hot Heat - JFK's LSD | YouSendIt Snoop Dogg - Upside Down ft. Nipsey Hussle | YouSendIt Nas vs. Cornershop - If I Ruled the World [...]
The //word// of the day is Juxtaposition. Ideas contrasted against others are what create friction, or heat. Temperature is a tricky thing to measure, because any difference in temperature is an heat /energy gain or an heat/energy loss. What you feel is not hot or cold, but the loss or gain of energy, or the flow of heat. Just basic thermodynamics. Some materials are more conductive to the flow of heat than others. Ok. So whats with the juxtaposition of ideas? Oh yeah, they create friction, which creates heat, which is energy. Its not about too much or too little, [...]
British electronic band Hot Chip have announced the February 9th, 2010 release of their fourth LP, brilliantly titled One Life Stand . The new effort will feature guest spots from drummer Charles Hayward of This Heat and Leo Taylor of indie band The Invisible. The first track to emerge from the new album is "Take It In" and you can listen to it now below.
It's been two years since Vancouver's Hot Hot Heat have released any new music and it's probably been five or six since the phrase "New music from Hot Hot Heat" engendered a lot of excitement. Regardless, yesterday the band released two tracks from their upcoming album, "Future Breeds" and "JFK's LSD." While the tracks don't come out of left field or introduce any wildly new elements to band's music, they both trade in the powerful melodic sense that decorated their other releases for a darker, angular sound. "JFK's LSD" in particular sounds [...]
And the sample sizes continue: Hot Hot Heat are serving up two tracks from their new album, Future Breeds. They've not done a record since 2007, and I'd chide them for their slow work rate, but they've admitted that themselves : Singer/keyboardist Steve Bays apologized to fans for "taking so long to finish" the disc in a Nov. 4 post on the band's website, but said Future Breeds is "by far" his "favourite thing we've ever done." If Gordon Smart starts to point out his own shortcomings, we won't have [...]
Vancouver's Hot Hot Heat have dotted the i's and crossed the t's on their first new album in three years. Future Breeds will be coming out early in the new year. There's no firm date attached to it yet, but they've got some shows in BC in early February, so my guess is it will be out around those (hopefully they're better live now than the last time I saw them). Grab yourself a couple of

Ah, finally! I've been nervously waiting for a follow-up to Made In The Dark , which is quite the pop gem, for ages now, and I can only rejoice at the news that Hot Chip 's new album, titled " One Life Stand ", will get released at the beginning of 2010. Here's what I've read about the record in a press release I've just received: One Life Stand sees a proliferation of influences as diverse as the burgeoning UK funky scene to soul music, modern R&B, Northern Soul, Gospel, Golden Age Electronica, House, [...]
It's been a while since we've heard from Hot Hot Heat but looks like we don't have to wait much longer. Future Breeds is their new upcoming release according to their newly launched website. Hot Hot Heat have been recording...
