Sitting through commercials is usually a pretty miserable experience. It feels like little sections of your life getting eaten up, 30 seconds at a time. Even the ones with good, home-made jingles are fun for a while but become increasingly annoying with each listen. Right when your favorite show reaches its most engaging point, you're left hanging and a flood of obnoxious advertisements rushes in, trying to tactfully convince you to spend money or to remember their convenient phone number so when you do finally decide that you need an injury lawyer or a gym membership, you'll know [...]

High Highs started in Australia and picked it up in New York (along with an extra member). Their sound has a sparse and ethereal quality which can be heard all over their debut, self-titled EP. It seems that 2012 is there for the taking for the trio, so Bowlegs caught up with vocalist Jack Milas and got the low-down. High Highs - Ivy by charmfactory Bowlegs: You originally formed in 2009 in Australia – how did you both end up in New York with a [...]
It may be that I'm just not looking in the right places, but it's not often that I see the genres of folk and EDM merged together, nor did I ever really have the desire to. But Mojo Filter has changed that with his edit of/tribute to Swedish folk group Junip's "I'm Alright" . If the name Junip sounds only vaguely familiar, you may be more familiar with their lead singer, Jose Gonzalez, known for his solo covers of "Heartbeat" and "Teardrop" , among others. On this track, Mojo Filter takes the airy sweetness of Gonzalez's voice [...]

ALBUMS OF 2011 #35 - #31 #35 Destroyer - Kaputt - Poor In Love ( MP3 ) A January release date rendered Destroyer 's Kaputt one of 2011's first great records. Its the ninth studio album from Vancouver's Dan Bejar, a re-imagining of 1980s synthpop and glamorous shoegaze, laden with female harmonies and brass sections, squealing dance synths and seamless intertwining transitions of close-mic vocals, watery background noise and modern synthesisers. #34 Gang Gang Dance - Eye Contact - Mindkilla ( MP3 ) [...]

Every mix monday there are a few mixes that I've downloaded with no artist or mix name. I usually can identify them but this week there's a decent mix with a pretty bomb tracklist that I can't ID. Let me know if you have a clue. Mystery Vitamin: Mixtape Dec 11 ( Download ) Neoteric & Matty C - White Light 50 Mix Tracklist ( Download ) Luca C & Brigante – Sunrise Jason Forrest – Raunchy (Jokers Of The Scene remix) [...]

#50 Walls - Coracle - Sunporch ( MP3 ) Banjo Or Freakout 's Alessio Natalizia partners with one half of Allez-Allez to create Walls , who released their enchanting debut album 'Coracle' on Kompakt records towards the end of 2011, with accompanying tour. Its heated and swirling electronica which retains the gentle organic feel of his BOF solo project, but with an overbearing ambience and driving euphoric dance beat. You can stream the album in full here . #49 Korallreven - An Album By Korallreven - The Truest [...]
The 50th edition of the White Light Mix Series comes courtesy of founders Neoteric and Matty C, aural bliss is what we get. Put this on for your christmas dinners if you want your loved ones to keep that christmas spirit. "When we put the first few mixes together, we never thought it would lead to a series. It was the DJs and the listeners who were so inspired by them that kept us moving forward. Now, as we hit Volume 50 we look back with pride, while looking forward to the next 50. Trust us, [...]

This Music Wins Albums Of 2011 #1 // 40 - 31 continued from part #1 #40 Girls - Father, Son, Holy Ghost (True Panther Sounds) Arguably Girls ' most courageous attempt yet, here the San Francisco surf rock band venture in to the realm of classic rock, not stopping short of cheesy licks, walking bass-lines or even gospel choirs. The soulful backing singers and hammond organs characterise most of 'Vomit', a song which strikes at [...]

In just a few short days, I ship off to Sweden to (hopefully) see the northern lights . To celebrate, I gathered together some of my favorite Swedish music. Recently I read that Sweden was the third largest exporter of music, behind the US and UK. No idea if that's actually true, but any country that puts The Knife on their official tourism website gets a thumbs up from me… The Cardigans - "Lovefool" Lykke Li - "Little Bit" [...]
After five years of streamed video coverage, three original albums, and eight LPs of downloadable covertunes, this year's Advent Calendar from well-known YouTube coverfount ortoPilot (aka Manchester-based multi-instrumentalist Matt Hutchison) is a thing of joy and wonder: 25 coversongs, released one a day until Christmas, and though many of them come pop-polished and high-concept, already I've fallen in love. ortoPilot's folkier, stripped-down covers, represented here by takes on Tracy Chapman and Oasis, are delicate, yet bluesy. His Cure cover is a lightly electronic folkrocker, his Coldplay cover is quietly [...]
There's a new episode of SVT Klubbland online today featuring José González performing with The Gothenburg String Theory : http://blogg.svt.se/klubbland/ 2011/12/09/43-jose-gonzalez-th e-gothenburg-string-theory/

Photo by Philip Cosores After spending the last couple of years exploring the possibilities of his band Junip, Jose Gonzalez is going back to the solo material that made him well-known. In an email sent to the Junip mailing list, Gonzalez revealed that he is already writing new material, which would be the follow-up to 20072s In Our Nature (has it been that long?). And, you can help the process. The purpose behind the email is that Gonzalez is looking for a "house/villa (he) can rent somewhere sunny during February-March." His wishlist [...]

High Highs ' self-titled EP is the culmination of a formative period that has seen Australian duo Jack Milas (hushed folky vocals, subtle strumming) and Oli Chang (retrograde synth and bass) relocate to New York, acquire a drummer in the person of Long Islander Zach Lipkins, turn heads at SXSW and cover Wild Nothing, as well as playing support slots for Swedish trailblazers The Radio Dept. and troubadour Jose Gonzalez. It's an impressive CV but, most importantly, not as impressive as the soft-pedalled meld of music they create: there's so much in these four songs to appeal to [...]

After last year's surprisingly successful Turkey Day spent solo," I decided not to make the trek home again this year for the big family dinner (and by that I mean my extremely important delivery job kept me from doing so). But pity me not as I enjoyed the next best thing... grilled turkey and the company of good friends. Now first thing's first... if you've never tasted grilled turkey then you've never tasted PERFECTLY cooked bird. The juices... the flavor... the skins... Before I get too carried away (I've already begun disrobing at the thought of [...]

Artwork by: Sougwen Chung [RSS Readers: See post to listen to audio] "Play Pencil Pimp !!" is what I kept yelling at the recent Sepalcure show in NYC, today they got Pitchfork's Best New Music on their debut Self Titled album, we've supported their sound from the beginning, I couldn't be happier for them, you can buy their LP here . HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. Usually when you say Jose Gonzalez a girl in the room will scream and say "OMG I love him!" I do [...]

Here's one thing about Brandon Herrington you need to know: he founded Fareveller , a weekend-long music festival in Memphis that will celebrate its second year this March. Here's (maybe) a more important thing about Brandon Herrington: he founded Fareveller because he loves music, and because no one else had yet. To anyone else, creating a 4-day, multi-venue music festival from scratch would be the last conceivable way to stay active in music. To hear Brandon tell it, it was as simple as going to the store when you realize you're out of milk. Because [...]

Cannons - Little Scream // Buy The Heron and The Fox - Little Scream // Buy I've begun to seriously question why I haven't moved to (or at least visited) Montreal yet, as this city keeps popping up in my music research. The newest addition to that ever-growing list of musical faves currently based in The City of Saints is Iowa-born Little Scream (@little_scream). Little Scream is the moniker of Laurel Sprengelmeyer [...]

When I was in the 5th grade, my grandpa came to live with my family. At the time, I thought it might be temporary, but by the time I got to high school, it started to feel like forever. I wasn't always so appreciative of him being around all the time. Some days, I felt like he was just lurking around when all I wanted was some privacy. While other kids' parents were at work, I always had a third parent around. Over the years, he chaperoned my parties and literary magazine production nights, and helped fuel my crafting addiction [...]

It's funny how we can develop certain associations with certain foods. They can remind us of specific or general points in our life. For example, I'm not sure I'd ever tried kabocha squash before I met Kasey, but it's an ingredient we use frequently during the Fall and Winter months. As a result, I've developed several associations with it including Fall (of course), Kasey, and cold nights that grow dark too soon. So today's recipe, Pistachio-Dusted Kabocha Squash , is a true Fall recipe for me and a classic Kasey dish. It's warm, simple and somewhat savory-sweet. I'm certain [...]
