Attending the Cabinet of Wonders is one of the smartest things you can do in New York City and definitely one of my favorites. Created by Wesley Stace (aka John Wesley Harding) , the Cabinet features his friends in music, literature, and comedy. And believe me, he has pretty amazing friends. Located at the beautiful City Winery , these shows are my one opportunity to feel like a classy grownup. This weekend's sold out Cabinet was pretty spectacular, featuring music from John Wesley Harding , Spinto Band , Punch Brothers , [...]

Amazon Flashback: 2004. Ottawa singer-songwriter Kathleen Edwards has made a bit of a name for herself with her debut album Failer the year before, and perhaps seeking to solidify the lucrative "people-who-buy-their-CDs-whil e-buying-coffee" demographic, contributes a song to the Starbucks/Hear Music-assembled Sweetheart: Love Songs compilation. This places her alongside artists like Aimee Mann and Josh Ritter in recording love songs covers, just in time for Valentine's Day. Edwards chooses to reinterpret a Tom Petty song from his 1989 solo album, Full [...]

Country sounds from an urban girl, Rebecca Pronsky 's second release was recorded in Parsonsfield, Maine and it is here where its sound lies. With the assistance of engineer Sam Kassirer, previously working with the likes of Josh Ritter and John Prine, this Nanci Griffith-reminiscent recording harks back to the work of classic country music stars, harbouring a distinctive jazz-trained vocal coupled with urgent, quick tempoed melodies. Born and raised in Brooklyn, NY, Pronsky's follow-up to 20072s Departures & Arrivals paints personal stories centring on love, relationships and doubt, placed against [...]

The Tree Ring @ San Diego Women's Club by Natalie Kardos . The Tree Ring top my list of top song obsessions for 2011. Frontman Joel P West also appears on the list. Song obsessions are those songs that your brain picks for you, those ear worms that get stuck in your head and have you singing them to yourself or going back to hit repeat on your ipod. I like the idea of reporting what my brain got stuck on each year. Here's the list of the songs that were stuck in [...]

As I wrote just over a year ago in a 2-part feature on How To Be A Coverblogger [ Pt. 1 / Pt. 2 ], keeping a coverblog requires a touch of obsession, an itch to live the writing life, and a willingness to keep a keen eye on a select handful of trusted sources. But though we watch the other coverbloggers carefully throughout the year, we are folkies first and foremost here at Cover Lay Down. And - as we noted atop our year's end mix - some of the [...]

Last night our Jen rang in the new year with Josh Ritter and the Royal City Band in Northampton, MA. And this happened. Thank you to @goodinthestacks for capturing this moment. Happy new year!
Nikki Lane – Gone, Gone, Gone. Download "Gone, Gone, Gone" (mp3). Nikki Lane has a voice that belts like Loretta Lynn's on this debut album of delectable, honky tonk country. This EP was released as a precursor to her full-length album, Walk of Shame, which was also released this year. This shortplayer includes the two best songs from Walk of Shame, "Gone, Gone, Gone" and "Coming Home to You," but it also includes two great additional tracks – "Western Bound" and "Down to the Wire." Milo Greene – The Hello Sessions. Download "1957" (mp3). The Hello [...]

This year I have seen Josh Ritter play eleven times in five different states. I have traveled over 5000 miles to accomplish this. Now while some might consider this to be crazy, I at least know that my fellow fans at the Ruckus would not. The first show of the year was the Valentine's Day Brawl in NYC with Cheryl and Tiffiny. And it was electrifying. It featured a massive slow dance to "Kathleen," complete with a disco ball. Need I say more? March brought John Wesley Harding/Wesley Stace's "Cabinet of [...]

It's been a long year. Scratch that, it's been a veeerrrry long year. From social revolutions to the end of our occupation of Iraq, from the death of celebrities and dictators to a man who sneezes bullets and the mystery of planking, the world experienced a slew of emotions and all sorts of cultural and political upheaval in 2011. And that's not even counting the plethora of music news that had the blogosphere abuzz this year . So, as the question begs, what comes next? Well, 2012. If you were to believe certain [...]

This is not a standard "year-end list," nor is it a standard "Knox Road year-end list." See, we decided to do something different this year. I should note that, most importantly, Jamie and I just didn't have the time to make a post like we've done the past couple years (see here and here ), and we also didn't have the time to listen to so many of the great albums out this year. So, we asked for our talented writing team (who says you can't be a talented music listener??) to contribute not only [...]
It's hard to believe that 2011 is almost over. It seemed like not really that long ago that we were putting together our Best Songs of 2010 mixtapes (now working on Vol. IV for 2011) - which by the way, are still up and running (a few missing mp3 links, but 90% operational), and well [...] Read more, get songs or stream the entire mix on Indie Rock Cafe
Slim pickin's for a mid-December release schedule today -- how things have changed in the (formerly) mighty music biz. It is the holidays, yes? Still, some worthwhile choices including the live CD /DVD package from Josh Ritter, the moody and naked piano ballad versions of 80's hits from Amel ia Warner -- aka Slow Moving Millie -- in the U.K. and the pop/folk debut from Portland- ia trio The Lower 48. Also on tap: the new Jonsi soundtrack to We Bought A Zoo , the latest [...]

Well, Josh Ritter is pretty awesome, probably good live. I am sure that your grandparents would enjoy Rammsteins greatest hits, so there is that. Isn't Amy Winehouse dead? Amy Winehouse: Hidden Treasures (2-LPs) [vinyl] Graham Repulski: My Color Is Red Hans Zimmer: Sherlock Holmes: A Game Of Shadows (soundtrack) Jonsi: We Bought A Zoo (soundtrack) Josh Ritter: Live At The Iveagh Gardens Kurt Von [...]

Please, Please, Please: A Tribute to the Smiths Tanya Donelly, The Wedding Present, Built to Spill's Doug Martsch In a slim release week I can also recommend Charlotte Gainsbourg's new album Stage Whisper , which contains both studio recordings and live tracks. Queen's Royal Orb USB Limited Edition Premium Box Set is a majestic orb that contains a USB stick containing every studio release by the band. What new releases are you picking up this week? What can [...]

Contributed by Trevor Meyer Last night, I traveled to the bootleg theater in LA to catch three superb acts. It was a fantastic show because each act was so unlike the act before it, yet the audience gravitated to all three performances. In a sea of black rimmed glasses, flannels, and irony, Ana Egge stepped to the stage with her acoustic guitar. The Saskatchewan native quickly captivated the audience with her soothing voice and sharp guitar playing. Ana was accompanied by drummer, [...]
www.youtube.com/watch?v=jndxvw UWs_E --------------- I grew up ... in West London. Apart from a year in Madrid, I've always lived here. Now you can find me in ... Highbury, North London, just up the road from the Emirates. When Arsenal score the windows shake. If I'm not in the studio or on stage, you'll find me ... at home on the sofa. One of the best things about music is [...]
Click here to view the embedded video. Tonight, get a chance to hear Brooklyn songwriter, Casey Black . He's cranking up his Chinatown Bust Tour and he's on tonight at 8pm. This Nashville born songwriter brings along his storytelling style & dark lyrics to our fair city. He's a fine songwriter, one that I've come to enjoy listening to. His music is straightforward, delicate and accompanies his direct approach to songwriter and craft, he very much reminds me of Josh Ritter. Get yourself out tonight to Think Tank and see a [...]
