Listening to Saturday Night Gym Class , my first thought was WOWOWOW. Yes, sweet synths, chilled out, blissed out, textured electro loveliness. Saturday Night Gym Class's lush synths envelope you like a warm blanket in winter. The ambient track is taken from their debut EP "How To Build A Life Raft", from which the leading track is "I Know ft. Ellie Walker". Drawing comparisions to M83 and other electro outfits of the same ilk such as Crystal Castles and Ladytron , this young four piece met while studying at University. The band [...]
This month marks the 10th anniversary of Fluxblog. I will be doing a few things to celebrate the occasion over the course of the year, but the main thing is that I will be putting together survey mixes for each year the site has existed. The mixes will be released on the first weekday of each month this year, culminating in revised/expanded versions of the 2010 and 2011 mixes and this year's survey at the start of December. 2002 was an interesting year, with a lot of major stuff bubbling up as the identity of the decade [...]

So today is either the day you have been waiting for or dreading, depending on stance on LDR. Personally I don't really care anymore. But that is mostly because I don't care about ANYTHING anymore so that is just one more thing to not care about. It's pretty exhausting to have keep track of so so many things I no longer care about. Adam Arcuragi: Like a fire that consumes all before it... The Asteroids Galaxy Tour: Out of Frequency The Big [...]

Legendary poet and singer-songwriter Leonard Cohen releases a new album this week, Old Ideas . The Big Sleep's Nature Experiments , Gotye's Making Mirrors , and The Pines: Dark So Gold are all albums I have heard and can strongly recommend. One Model Nation's Total Werks Vol. 1 (1969-1977) is the companion music to Dandy Warhols frontman Courtney Taylor-Taylor's new graphic novel, One Model Nation [...]

2011 proved to be a breakthrough year for the diminutive Kiwi songstress with the big voice. Kimbra has dropped her fourth single from 'Vows' the tantalizing 'Two Way Street' accompanied by an old-school live-in-studio-performance video clip and remix package featuring a mix from Australian minimal/house prodigy Beni . Check out the video clip here , and listen to the Beni Remix of Two Way-Street, below. You can download it here . Kimbra - Two Way Street - (Beni Remix) by viceroyalty [...]
Sarah McIntosh could easily be lumped in with female-fronted electro-pop bands such as La Roux and Ladyhawke, but the sophisticated gothic sheen on pop melodies she offers with her band the Good Natured sets her apart. Slinking between Scandinavian-like bubblegum choruses to sensually dark undertones that echo Ladytron, McIntosh (along with her brother Hamish and bandmate George Hinton) writes pop that is flirty but she is far from a novice. At only 20 years old, she already has released a third EP titled "Skeleton," which also serves as the U.S. debut for the Good Natured and a nice [...]

If you've read any of my previous posts, you'll know i'm a huge fan of John Digweed. I listen to his podcats and live mixes regularly. I'm assuming John has ultimate veto power when it comes to the guests he chooses for TRANSITIONS SHOW - like his mixes - are stellar. Last May, he had NY native ROYAL SAPIEN (aka BEN MAUTNER) on the show. Ben had worked tirelessly to create an EPIC ableton mix called STACKED. His appearance on the TRANSITIONS show, was the debut of the mix. According to Ben, [...]

I was in DJing in Lavery's on Boxing Night, and I decided to open the set with a track I'd been trying to track down for ages. Do you ever get a song stuck in your head, but you just can't pinpoint what it is? You try humming it to people, but they just look at you as if you are mental. This was one of those songs, and I actually worked out what it was from a clip in a Family Guy episode where Chris is imitating the infamous scene from Silence Of The [...]
Here's Altrok 90.5 HD2's rundown for 2011 (technically 12/15/2010 - 12/15-2011) with each band represented by their highest charting track during that period, as determined by airplay on the station. We couldn't afford Price Waterhouse for the tabulations, but the software we used seems pretty solid. (Update: Okay, so we screwed up on The Drums. We like The Drums.) 90.5 - Bombay Bicycle Club - Shuffle 90 - Digitalism - 2 Hearts 89 - Blood Orange - Forget It 88 - Foals - Spanish Sahara 87 - Radiohead - Lotus Flower 86 [...]
I'll remember 2011 as a year with more good music than I had time to devote to it. Because my primary focus is music emerging from SoCal — and because there was so much of it this year — I found myself taking only passing interest in many hyped albums ... and not finding a lot of best in what the interwebs deemed "best new music." So fire me. Many of my favorite albums of the year came artists with whom I'd already developed a listener's relationship. Following are my favorite 20 [ excluding local artists, because I [...]
![[Ones To Watch] – Introducing – Kool Thing](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/3957383_lg.jpg)
Tweet The duo known as Kool Thing , made up of Julie Chance and Jon Dark, met at at one of Dark's DJ events in Paris in 2010. Quickly noticing a kindred musical taste, the pair began to share records and discuss musical ideas. Julie, (from Dublin, Ireland) and Jon (from Sydney, Australia) soon started organizing a move to Berlin, where they sat down to put their vision to reality. Kool Thing brings to life the jewel-toned hours of night that [...]

1. There Is A Light That Never Goes Out – Dum Dum Girls [...]
With fewer and fewer albums being released in favour of more cost-effective EPs and singles the Best Album category becomes harder and harder to preside over, luckily for us there were some choice cuts this year and some amazing records dropped. The winner was very nearly going to be Mitch Murder 's recently released 'Current Events'. Which, to my mind, is the best SynthWave/Outrun/Dreamwave album ever made. However, the album that has kept us constantly rocking this year has to be Holy Ghost! 's self-titled début. Although I had loved the previous singles I [...]

It's been a long year. Scratch that, it's been a veeerrrry long year. From social revolutions to the end of our occupation of Iraq, from the death of celebrities and dictators to a man who sneezes bullets and the mystery of planking, the world experienced a slew of emotions and all sorts of cultural and political upheaval in 2011. And that's not even counting the plethora of music news that had the blogosphere abuzz this year . So, as the question begs, what comes next? Well, 2012. If you were to believe certain [...]

Last weekend J-Fur and I sat in La Crepe Bistro with two of our friends from Chicago. The four of us enjoyed fresh squeezed orange juice alongside crepes, omelets, quiche and Vegetable Au Gratin. While all the food was good, the highlight was the Vegetable Au Gratin. This thing was packed full of zucchini, mushrooms, onions and asparagus and drowned in a waterfall of butter and cheese. All of this reminded me that I had been in the process of working on my own Au Gratin earlier this fall before life got in the way. A [...]
